Update : Someone's buried in my grave.......

Good news.......
Received a call this morning saying they would move the person from my spot to his family plot where he should have been put in the first place. Now I can rest in peace more ways than one. It was good of them to do the right thing.....still good people around.

in Va. you would have to have a court order to have someone exhumed . I would go watch , unless you would rather be buried with the unknown . probably won't make any difference if your the last one standing.

You are lucky. My cousin claimed my mothers grave when she needed it most. We had to bury her up here instead of SC. This was after 40 years. Lawyer said cousin has papers, we do not. Tough, real tough.

I'll be thinking of you Monday afternoon as I'll be digging a grave then. I have been doing this since 1993, third generation digger in a small community. We did start digging in the wrong spot once, but the mortician came by and said he made a mistake. We have brought up wood and hinges, but my father did hit a hollow spot and sank to his knees, shook him up a bit for a few minutes and they found the bones but the cemetary had no records, so they threw in some dirt to make it the right depth and was done. And this is still done with tile spades and shovels, I always say handcrafted, we do use a loader tractor to remove the dirt and to backfill. Good workout for a couple of hours. And just like mailmen rain or snow it still has to be done. One job NOBODY ever offers help even if its your own family. chris

ust be nice to have dirt that soft. Takes longer than that with a backhoe in this area. Hand digging would be nearly a full day.

I hand dug this to get at a colapsed drain tile, too tight to get a machine in there. Took me about 3 hours, and I thought a lot about all the guys who hand dug graves.

Might be good to put up the grave stone now. Leave the death date blank, but put all the other info on it. Death date can be entered later. Your survivors will be grateful that they do not have to select a stone. I have mine already in place.

They still dig many graves by hand near us. One of my co-workers helps out. He said they often find bones, etc burried where there is no record. Apparently back in the old days, people would often bury their loved ones at night anywhere in the cemetary they could find so they didn"t have to buy a plot (or couldn"t afford one). As for me, I just hope they throw me in a ditch someplace, after I"m dead, I could care less.

I just ordered mine. It won't be done for a month or so. You sure get funny looks when you are 40 and tell people that you ordered your headstone. I figure this way I can get what I want since I will have to "live" with it. Also it will be cheaper now than in another 40 years.

Worked in a grave yd on Long Island and the stones were made for five deep on each side. In the new section the stones were placed back and the each plot was foot to foot with the new row. Nothing to do with actual grave digging for my job.
