WHAT causes it ,,aND ,wHAT NEEDS to be fixed that will keep them from Leaking out the top AIR VENT ???, Nephew claims it is the 100 degree heat , but it was in the 40s this Am ,. These guns are not new ,, But they certainly are not WORN out , Just SLoppy to Work with ..

I dont think there is actually any seal inside just a loose machine fit.Once you bleed them and the grease gets between the surfaces they will not seal 100%. Have you tried a new vent? I know all of mine ooze a little grease at times. I just wipe them off before i use them.

plug it off,you dont need it to bleed the air out.
just leave the head loose on the tube a turn or two ,after a couple strokes tighten the head, air will be gone.

I'd like to know why a grease gun is the first thing to wear out on the farm? It certainly isn't from lack of grease as mine are grease from one end to the other.

How often do you refill them?? If you leave grease sit for to long, the lubricant seperates from the carrier (the oil leaks out of the parrafin). Heat may speed up the process, but one way or the other, once it happens..... it's time for new grease.

Iv had some leak more than others one I had to weld the vent close and leave the head lose to bleed out the air on one of them.

I don't use the air vent. I loosen the pipe or flex hose and pump the gun. Seems to work faster getting the air out.

Keep them out of direct sunlight and, more importantly, lock back the spring loaded plunger handle during extended periods of non use.

I've seen grease guns with a screw type vent but most I've seen have a small hole in the thread area which allows air to escape when the head is loosened a few treads. After the air bleeds out, screwing the head back down tight shuts off the vent.
Having said that, the oil in many greases will separate (especially in hot weather) and leak out the t-handle hole and anywhere else there is a way to get out.
I just keep my gun wrapped up in an old rag and wipe it off every time I go to use it.

Can't see how one could wear out a grease gun in normal use.Hose and tip yes,the rest should last many yrs.

I got a lever and a hand pump gun.. the lever gun I've had for? 13 ys at least. It's had MANY cases of grease thru it.. it's a lil sloppy.. but it is still the one I reach for the most. it has a 18" hose.. the hand pumper has a 6" hard nozzle..

Getting to be 67 years old but a Linclon electric (18 volt I think) gun is sure one of the best things I ever purchased..
. When you get on something like and excvator boom or where there is a lot of fittings that uses several strokes really makes it faster..Vent thing over the years I have had some that leaked and some that did not. Like one of the other posters keep a rag handy with any greas gun..
