soldering (???) galvanized rain gutters/pipes??

Hey folks,
Can someone tell me in 1st grade terms how to
1. join lengths of gutters
2. solder on end caps, joints, etc

Just replaced a couple rusted out gutters and used clamps that you butt the ends together and clamp them (clamp has a rubber gasket). End caps kinda bumped on with a hammer but should be soldered I guess.

Like to be able to slide the gutter together but after staring at it like a monkey studying a math problem, can't visualize where to make the cut.

Is it as simple as melting lead into the seams/cornersor is it something a little trickier? Would something like JB weld be the best way to go?

Thanks, Dave

They make a nice gutter seal in a tube for caulk guns. I don't think they solder the aluminium ones just the copper but who can afford that.

Galvanized sheet metal is soldered using cut acid flux to clean then a tinned hot iron with eutectic solder. 60/40 if I remember right. Cut acid flux is hydrocloric acid with as much zinc dissolved in it as it will dissolve. The work must be thoroughly washed after soldering. Galvanized gutters were often done that way.

When I worked for a roofing company in the late sixties we soldered half round gutter together. I remember using acid and "ruby fluid" to clean the acid off before soldering.

It's halfround stuff. Guess I'll go the sealer route or something like liquid nails. The soldering and what is involved sounds like a recipe for disaster for me.

Thanks,

Dave

I watched crews do that when I was 9 years old. Fascinating the way they worked to do entire house. Used them old blow torches. Thought the house was cooked. Real tradesmen in those days 1952.

To solder galavanized, it needs to be real clean. Steel wool, the wipe down with muratic acid. You should use a soldering paste. Smear it on where you want the solder to stick, both ends. Then use an acid core solder and a torch or soldering copper.

Not an easy project for a beginner.
