Hey,
Just ran across a Dell Lattitude C810 laptop. Think it's still usable today?
It works fine but has old programs and system (windows NT?). Hate to throw it away.
Any ideas?

Dave

You could always put linux in it. Linux is an alternate operationg system that is freely available from the internet.

I would max out the memory installed. Go to: www.crucial.com and use the memory configurator to find out what kind of memory and how much it will hold.

Go to: www.distrowatch.com for a distro to download and install.

Good luck.

Depends on what you need to do. NT was an OK system. Unless you would need drivers for some newer peripherals.

For Linux, I would suggest Umberto

I just got a Dell E6510 about two weeks ago (from work).

But, I still use an 8yr old Dell C840 (similar to a C810). I can't get used to the new "short and wide" screens (that seems to be the new standard for everything). I can read more and a lot faster on my old one. I ordered a new 22" monitor, hopefully that will make the new one usable.

With a clean copy of Windows XP, the old C8xx laptops are very usable. They were a ruggedly build decent machine in their day. Keeps the screws on the back side tight with a little medium strength Locktite.

It's worth keeping... or sell it on Ebay. I buy another when a motherboard (or whatever) fails. I now have three and swap parts around as needed to keep one running.

I do find it hard to get rid of things I like which are still working just for the sake of "upgrading".

jmho.
