gear box foaming

Evening,
Picked up a new rototiller this spring. King Kutter 6ft for occasional use here and there.

I am running 85w140 GL-5 in the gear box and side case. When I checked the oil levels I can see foam in the gear box and a little foam comes out the side case plug.

Last week I ran tiller over an area that had never been broken up, approximately 50'x200'. I scraped the sod off. Then I tilled bare but compacted top soil last night. The ground is soft and the tiller sinks in good, its not bouncing or beating up the tiller. I checked the fluids today, you could still see the foam, quite a bit 24 hours later.

Oil: Traveller (TSC) 85w140.

I am hoping there is a straight forward answer why this happens vs. "just dump this super expensive additive in it, don't know why it works but it does." Not trying to offend anybody that swears by additives, I'm just wondering why the oil is foaming. I have many, many pieces of equipment and have never had foam problems.

Only thing I can guess is that
1. I am running it too hard
2. I am too high on the RPMs (above 540pto)
3. Or both.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

You are OBSESSING over a non-existent problem.

Enjoy your tiller. As long as there's lube in the gearbox all is WELL!

I tend to agree with "Bob" about it not being a problem. You might try a better grade of gear oil than Travelers. That is the cheapist stuff you can buy. I have had several tractors in with hydraulic problems because of Traveler Hydrualic oil. Pretty crappy quality.

I ran some case ih 85 140 gear lube in the manual transmission of my dodge truck and it foamed terrible I had ran other weights of case gear oil with no problems with foaming

Have been told and also have read, if you have foam, it's from cheap oil, water making it foam and something isn't getting proper lubrcation. Air and bearings don't mix. Don c

The problem as previously stated is the Traveler (TSC) 85w140 gear lube.Drain and replace with Amsoil or Mobile One synthetic. The gearbox will run cooler too.
That traveler stuff worse that using kitchen cooking oil.

I had a pressure washer and the oil started foaming. Come to find out a few drops of water got past an o-ring. Water + heat + oil = foam. Had to replace the pump.

Not saying your problem isn't bad oil. Sometimes changing the oil to a different brand may solve the problem, because you got rid of the water in the bottom of the gear box when you chainged the oil or you got rid of the crappy oil.

I would drain everything and look for water, expecially if you keep your mower outside.

Hope this helps.
