can someone tell me how to get the old outer seal out of the axle housing? I removed the dust cover, but that was as far as I got. I could not get the spacer, or retainer out.

Don't know what kind of rig you have, but if its the common seal that installs from the outside, drill a hole in it, screw in a self-tapping screw, attach same to a slide hammer, and start hammerin'.

Won't work. I have to remove the "spacer" before I can get at the seal, or retaining ring that contains the seal. It's a 1944 JD B.

I believe you can use a small chisel and go around the edge till it pops off. Other wise if you are replacing the oil seal near the bull gear it should push off with the axle. Ron Mn.

This is the outer seal. I can, and did use a chisel to seperate the retainer from the housing, but could only get it out about 1/2 inch. That was it. That spacer appears to be preventing it from moving further.

The spacer should just slide off the axle. You may need to use a small punch to spin it a little to loosen it. If you having an oil leak at the end of the axle housing this seal is not your problem. It is only a felt grease retainer. The seal that is leaking is behind the bull gear. Good luck with it.

The spacer spins on the axle, but does not slide off. This is exactly my problem, and I can't get anything behind it, or between the housing and it, to get it off. I was told that the felt seal on mine needs replacement.

You do know that you will need to remove the rear cover and remove the nut that holds the bull gear on the axle. The axle will then slide out and you can access those pesky seals from the inside with a long bar or drift.

jack you rear axel must come out part way to get the outer felt seal out but that is not your problem if lecking rear end greese IE 80 90 140 you need to replace axel seal on inner end of axel right behind the bull gear the outer felt is jush a dirt seal to kept out dirt and kept gun gressse in the brg Hope this helps Kent
