night time+autosteer+bad tile= totaled header

Probably gave the guy a fat lip too. I've dropped a narrow front end into holes a couple of times, surprised it didn't snap the pedestal.

Gawd, Ive dropped into some nasty tile blowouts but that has to be a world record! I"m sure that doesn"t make the owner warm and fuzzy. Well at least the Agstar is intact so I think he needs to mark that spot on the SAT. WOW, OUCH! I watched a program on OSU"s ed channel many years ago about hydro pressure on underground drain systems and they had a pressure gauge on an underground drain system on camera during a major rainstorm and it reached pressures over 1500psi is that possible? and with tile that size it"s instant major crater blowout!

That reminds me of when i ran the combine over a 36"culvert on my road and the thing colapsed. I was in high so the front wheels bounced through.I was bounced so hard i could not get my hand on the hydro lever. The rear wheels went in deeper but allso jumped back out sending the rear up in air.Its hard to steer when the tires arn't on the ground.

several years back Dad and I dug some large rocks out of a pasture that we were using for hay ground. rocks were 2-3 ft thru. we didnt think about filling in the holes. Next year he sends me out with the 101 IH combine to cut Brome seed. What a thrill, watching the header and all of a sudden see a hole 4 ft across go under the cutter bar. Missed it with the drive wheels but took a while for my heart to slow down.

Not sure if that brown stuff around the cab door and behind head is Fodder or not .not a good feeling

I was taught that lights were for getting to or from the field, not using in the field. Following that advise has surely saved me many hours in equipment repairs.

Corn looks pretty green yet. We have some, not much around here that green but the ears are drooped. Lots of guys out yesterday with beans and corn. Rain today.

if the field is tiled for drainage, there will be a network of of either clay or plastic tiles buried in the field to help carry excess water away. if the tile breaks, or becomes plugged, a hole develops in the ground around the tile. each rain will carry sediment thru the hole, making it deeper.

That is when a tile breaks and the dirt around it washes down the drain, usually are small enough that combine tire would have rolled over it but that must be a major outlet tile of at least 2' or more in diameter for the hole to get that big.

A tile hole happens when a section of drainage tile collapses or gets a hole in it for whatever reason, and water running into the hole washes the surrounding soil into the tile. The more rain and water, the bigger the hole. In areas with sugar sand just a crack in the tile can make a tile hole. A tile hole can grow surprisingly fast in a wet year like this.Jim
