Does anybody know what "WD" stood for? Was it simply a random lettering sequence used by Allis Chalmers?

Just figured D followed C so the WC was upgraded to the WD.

That is right. Similarly, the W-series was the next generation to follow the U-series (probably should have been the called the V-series). Although Allis kept on making the U-series all they way up to the 1950s, the W-series were much cheaper due to the frame being made out of two pieces of channel iron instead of cast. Possibly the use of this frame type is where the double-u came from?

"W" was probably a good choice- "VD" wouldn't have sounded right...
