which tractor?

I am currently looking for another tractor, and need some recommendations. I currently have a wd45 but find it uncomfortable and the rear tires are short. Heres what I would like. A decent sized 3 plow tractor. That sits up a little bit. Room on the operator platform to sit half way normal without my knees in my chin. Would like the tractor to be decently heavy, and live pto to run my all crop 60. I have been looking at farmall 400 and 450 and oliver 770 and 880. Whats your guys opinion?

never owned a 770 but it's a nice tractor , I think it has a under drive. the 400 450 or 880 are bigger tractors a little thirsty on gas and diesels might be hard to find. good luck

You could never go wrong with an Oliver 1550/55 or 1600/50/55. I wouldn"t recommend a 1600 diesel though, as i have always heard they had a reputation for breaking crankshafts.

well i have in my mind i want an oliver....i have looked at the 4 number olivers but i thought they might look funny pulling an all crop combine...i don;t want to get to modern....still want to stay a little vintage..i am keeping my WC...my first choices would be a 770 or 880 but they aren;t plentiful around here...which is probably why i want one..i don;t want to be on the green/yellow bandwagon that we have around here...also gas or diesel doesn;t matter much to me...i just do this for fun/hobby

I would have to go with an Oliver. Something like the 88, S88 770 880 or one of the 1600s. Hard to beat that smooth 6 cylinder when it comes to pulling

Ford 800, 4000 or 5000, Deere 620 or 720, 3010, 1520, 2020, 2510, Massey 165, 180. Case 400 or 500. there are other good ones, but these come to mind first. Whichever you get the best deal on and has the best dealer/service in your area.

Go with the 770 or 880. Or even a 1550 or 1600. There's a 1600 gas coming up on the consignment sale at Trufant Mi this coming Saturday. It belonged to a neighbor here. Has an aftermarket seat and a boot in one rear tire, wide front,a LITTLE rough around the edges cosmetically, but a decent runner.

6 cylinder Olivers dont lug very well. Try it on the dyno sometime. A good 400/450 will have 57-60hp and they are great tractors. Olivers are good to, just have not been around them alot.

massey ferguson 65 high wheeler; load tires, put on rear wheel weights and you"ll have a nice, powerful, comfortable tractor. i"ve operated a 7" massey harris clipper combine with such tractor on steep, hilly ground and it handled it with ease.

Ditto on the Massey. Have a 165 Gas. Handiest darn little tractor ever made. Pulls like a tractor twice it's size. Nice seat , available parts and small enough to move on a tandem trailer behind a full sized pickup or Suburban.

(quoted from post at 02:12:59 09/22/10) Consider a 730 Case Diesel, will do everything you mentioned and then some.
I ended up buying an all original with nice paint and decals, oliver super 77 with a 4240 3 bottom plow....thanks for all the suggestions guys
