Hey guys:

How often do you change your transmission filters? Its a 2004 LB7 engine with 5 speed 1000 series tranny, 4x4. Truck has about 130,000 miles. I want to change at least my spin on filter. If I were to pull pan and change filter inside, how much oil would I need to add to fill it back to normal level? I also noticed a difference when looking up internal filters. They show a different filter, one for a shallow pan and one for a deep pan, which do I have?

I swap my transmission filter and top it off at every oil change, which is performed when the computer tells me to. I swap fluid and filters every 30K, that's mainly highway service with some heavy weekend towing. Close to 200k on my 2007 with no problems. I'm afraid I have the transfer case "pump rub" problem, though. I've got a leak coming from a pinhole in the side. Gonna fix it with some jbweld for the time being.

The spin on should be changed evey 15000 miles, IIRC, internal and fluid @ 100000, could have been 50000. Dont recall specifically the amount of fluid, but I think it was 14 quarts for a full change/flush. Mines an 08 though, so yours may be differnet.

Like I said mine is an 08, I dont even have 25000 on it. I do recall the little Duramax booklet saying some thing about the internal filter and fluid @ either 50000 or 100000. I have all of that stuff at work, if I think about it Ill look and see what it says.

I have an 04 same transmission and engine combination. The manuals says to change the spin on transmission filter with every engine oil change. It also says to flush the transmission every 50,000 miles if under heavy load; I interpeted that to mean more then 50% towing. Other wise to flush the transmission every 100,000 miles.

The spin on filter should be changed every time you change your motor oil. If the truck has 130K with the original fluid I would deffinatally get it changed. You need to read your owners manual on the procedure for checking fluid level in the Allison. That transmission is very sensitive to fluid level. One tip, when you change the spinon filter there is or should be a round magnet stuck to the inside of the filter. Make sure you transfer it to the new filter.

JB - I just had my transfer case pinhole fixed. My son is an ASE Certified Master Tech, and told me there were some service bulletins on the leak. I complained to my dealer a little, and darned if I didn't get the complete repair job taken care of on warranty. Mine is a 2003 with 110,000 miles on it. Everyone needs to beware of the transfer case pinhole problem. You can loose all your transfer case fluid and not even know it. Only leaks when you are going downt he highway. Bob
