Farmall M fuel filter

I am removing the carb for kit and repairs on my Farmall M tractor.

While I have it apart I am going to put an in-line filter on before I replace the carb.

Any recommendations on a type of fuel filter to put in the line? Size, capacity, make connections?

Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated rather than my second guessing.

The best advice we will give you here is to NOT install an in-line fuel filter. It is totally un-necessary. The sediment bowl under the tank already has an extremely fine mesh screen in it, and the fuel inlet fitting on the carburetor has an equally fine mesh screen. Anything that can get past either of those filter screens will go right through that in-line filter also. Save your money, and don't try to out think the engineers that designed your tractor.

I second that. The tractor will run for about 20 minutes, get warm and vaporlock. If your sedimant bowl isn't working, get a new assembly with a screen in it like it's supposed to have.

Im using a ball valve and a see through filter by Mr Gasket I picked up 4 years ago. Works just fine. Whatever in line you get, make sure it will work for with a gravity feed system. On my show tractors, I have sediment bowls. Ive had more problems with those leaking or not closing all the way no matter where I got it from. In fact, one of tractors had ro recently be repainted because of a leaking sediment bowl.

Trick with those is to just finger tighten them. If you use pliers or anything, you'll warp them and they won't seal.

An ordinary in line fuel filter will give you fits in a gravity flow system such as the M.

As others have mentioned it is not necessary and can cause problems.

You can use the see thru Fram ones hook one up rite out of the sediment bowl assy with rubber hose if you think your tank is dirty. They will collect fine stuff that the screen on the sediment bowl will pass and get plugged. I always use them when getting a new to me tractor for a while. They will collect and plug sometimes very soon.

I know that. Ive had sed. assem. from the cheapos at TS, to the expensive ones from the dealer. I think Ive even had one a few yars ago from Rusty, and it leaked eventually.

Yes when the tractor was new the tank was clean but now you can find lots of dirty tanks. The screen in the sediment bowl will collect lots but the filters also get what the screen passes. You guys dont get as many esed stuff as some of us to get into shape. It only takes aminute to change the filters lots quicker than cleaning carb.

I have several gas tractors on my farm, many were brought back from retirement, none of them have or need fuel filters, a good sediment bowl with a screen will do all that is needed, find one off a 510 massey combine, it has a screen that goes up into the tank, on one tractor I put a piece of 5/16" tube into the inlet of the sed. bowl crimped off at the top with several holes drilled into it as I was having problems with a tank that was soaked and power washed. Inline filters are made to have pressure pushing the fuel through them and in my mind look dorky on a tractor, it makes me cringe to see one. The inline strainers from Mr. Gasket will work with gravity.

Great posts and discussion from all. I was concerned about the in-line filter.

Experience is great education! Although sometimes my best lessons come from my mistakes.

Thanks to all who replied.
