JD GX345 Engine runs rough

I have a John Deere GX345 Kawasaki 20 HP engine. Engine is missing. I tried pulling each spark plug wires off and determined that the left cylinder is not firing properly. I have spark in that cylinder but it is not firing. The right side cylinder seems to be fine. I switched coils and they both appear to be good. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Check the easy stuff first... compression and valve action... check for bent or out of place pushrod(s).

Those engine are noted for the valves sticking when shut down hot without letting it idle to cool down. One of the valves probably stuck and then a pushrod jumped off when you started it.

Chances are you have a dropped valve pushrod. The ethanol in the gas causes a very sticky, gummy deposit on the intake valve which causes the valve to stick. In extreme cases you may have to pull the head and disassemble the valve to clean butyou can remove the intake manifold and spray carb cleaner on the valve and tap the end with a small hammer to loosen the valve and keep spraying with cleaner until the deposits are gone. This is the way I do it at John Deere where I work as a lawn mower tech.

Thank you for your help. I know what to start looking for now

Thank you for your help. I may have to take this in to be repaired. I was hoping it was something I could fix myself.

I assume you have checked or replaced the plugs. Just because the plug "looks good" doesn't mean it is good.
