Cockshutt 40 6 volt charging

having issues with cockshutt 40 charging.

Mid-restore, did not charge before restoring (did not run). All new wiring, new regulator, switches, and I went through the generator.
When it is running (and the regulator cover is off) I can push down on the contacts of the "L" terminal, and then it will charge just fine and kick out when I idle it down. BUT it will not kick back in when i rev it up again. I have traced, re-traced, and re-traced my re-trace to double check the wiring. I have tried another regulator with the same luck. I have checked different wiring schematics for other 6 volt tractors, and still no luck.

Any suggestions?

I doubt that it is two bad regulators, (both new) and if the generator was bad- then why does it charge when I manually close the "L" contacts?

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a voltmeter? Without me getting my parts book out I don't remember if the early 40 tractors had a 3 brush generator or not. I also have a generator trouble shooting chart I made up for the Oliver guys once. I will send you an e-mail. Reply back on that and I will send you the chart. To me the key item right now is the voltmeter, you need to check the voltage at the generator first. J.

Hey Gearhead - Punch below then follow the flow chart step by step to isolate the problem.

Based on what you've shared I'd be looking for: 1) A poor ground to the regulator base, or 2) The generator 3rd brush is set to the lowest output position - reset it to move it as close as possible to the nearest fixed brush. (This presumes your Cockshutt has a 3-brush Delco generator...)

Paragraph 5 of my Troubleshooting Procedure tells how to determine if non charging is more a Gennys versus a Voltage Regulator problem. If you can get it to charge that tells me the genny itself is okay so Id suspect a VR problem or its not well grounded.
