Fluid in tires

What is the fluid that is used for weight in tractor tires? The next question is how to dispose of it properly.

Thanks,
David

For years they've used calcium chloride, but our Case/IH dealer won't touch them since it's hard to dispose of. They recommend used anti-freeze, but its dangerous around animals if there's any spillage. Hal

It is calcium chloride. To dispose of it just spread it on a gravel road. The highway department uses it for dust control.

It should be calcium cloride, which is just a fancy salt solution. It'll kill grass if you dump it out, but is not condered a toxic material. It is also used at race tracks on the dirt tracks to keep the track moist & dust free - holds water.

So, just dump it on a gravel road as mentioned.

But, you might have some that used old antifreeze, windshield washer fluid, or other unknown stuff. I don't know what you'd do with that junk, it's a problem, toxic stuff.

Beet Juice - known as Rim Guard - is good stuff too, non-toxic, fairly new idea tho & expensive, so I bet you don't run into it in an unknown old tractor....

Any more it could be one of a few things. #1 you need to be sure what it is for sure. Most likely to be CACL which is a slat water mix and can be drained on weeds etc that you do not want to grow for a year or 2. But if it is a few of the other fluids you may want to drain them into a barrel and save because some are deadly to live stock and animals some can be recycled and some are safe to drain any place

Hard to dispose of? With the huge DOT budget cut backs especially for dust control, mowing etc. the local DOT boys are picking up the Calcium Chloride from tire shops and using that to help make up the shortage to spread on the gravel roads for dust control. Of course they do do a test to make sure it pure Calcium Chloride and nothing else has been mixed in.

Also during the winter months they spray the Calcium Chloride on the paved roads a few hours ahead of a storm and then each salt truck is now equiped with Calcium Chloride tanks that soaks the salt as it comes out of the spreader.

They started doing this 3 years ago and last year they started to add (when they gave the update on road conditions) a friendly reminder to wash your vechicle once the roads were dry.

Most people use calcium chloride. Put the valve at the bottom of the tire and let a little out, if it tastes salty , use it on your stone driveway to keep dust down .
