Need help with a leaky gas valve on my old WD...

I posted this in the main forum because I know lots of tractors probably use this type of sediment bowl/gas valve setup other than ACs. Basically, it's not the sediment bowl or the outlet or the inlet that is leaking, nor the connection to the tank.

The actual leak is coming from where you have the thumbscrew that opens and closes the valve. It sticks a little and whether it is open or closed, it just drips gasoline. It has done it for awhile now, but it has gotten really bad in recent months.

Again, it is leaking out of the thumbscrew area. If I take out that bolt that holds the thumbscrew in, is there some sort of gasket in there I can replace? Or is there a custom fix I can do for it? I hate to buy ANOTHER new gas valve for it... Especially when it's just that part that leaks.

The gas valve is new as of probably... 6 or 7 years ago? Hard to say.

OEM valves of this type used a leather packing that would last for many years.

Aftermarket valves may use a neoprene O ring. If so, you can replace it and it should be good for another couple of years.

i had same problem when i replaced the petcock on my '62 Ford 2000...new one was over $45. and started leaking within 3 months...i found a o-ring that was close to right size in my air condioning parts box and its been in there ever since.

I'm fairly certain it's an aftermarket valve bought circa 2004 or 2005 (I'm fairly certain it didn't come from AGCO, but I am unsure).

Is the O Ring behind that little nut fastener behind the thumb screw? I guess I need to drain the gas tank to work on it, at any rate.

Something to do this weekend. Drive her until she runs out of gas, then fix the valve.

Any idea what size or kind of O Ring to get? Can I just ask around at AUTOZONE or CARQUEST or NAPA and probably get lucky? :?

If it's as new as you say, there's more than likely an o-ring in it.If you know someone from an auto repair shop, have them match yours up to a green colored o-ring from their AC seal kit.

If the valve has a pressed together string-like seal in it,go to your local hardware store and ask for graphite faucet stem packing.

watched my dad make a repair Just like that When I was about 10 ,that was 45 yrs ago ,LEARNED ALOT FROM DAD ,, we lost him 2 yrs ago last month , He was 93

Well, I'm going to try and use up the last 5 gallons of gas in my tank this weekend (should take me around 2-3 hours with some good throttle, right?), then I'll pull the valve and see what we've got. Probably would do me good to take the gas tank off and clean it out while I've got the chance, too, as I think there's a wee bit of rust in the bottom these days (and dirt, and... other gunk).
