CB on tractor

I'd like to install a CB on a tractor, but I only have a small portable handheld Midland with 6 inch aerial. Can this be hooked to a larger aerial? Would I be happier with a trucker's model in a box? Tractor has no cab.
Any ideas?
Thanks

You should be able to get an adapter to connect your hand held to a taller antenna, like a magnet mount. Or you can do a CB in a box, and just make a quick disconnect so you can run it off of the tractor's battery, then unplug it quickly when you are finished...

If you're able to hear a CB on an open-station tractor without using an external PA-type speaker, you're running WAY too much muffler, IMHO. (lol)

Hello,
You can hook it up to an external antenna, if your set has an antenna jack.
The adapter will go into the radio jack and the other end will fit the coax cable fitting.

What the above posters said is correct but I do have to tell you that that setup won't have much range. You'll likely get a ton of RF interference from the engine and like the above poster said, How are you going to hear the durn thing?

DOUG IT CAN BE DONE. THE BEST WAY TO GO IS A STANDARD COBRA 25 OR 29 CLASSIC [THE 25 IS SMALLER OF THE TWO] OR A UNIDEN 66 OR 76. WITH THE RADIO OUT OF THE WAY THROW THE STOCK MIC IN THE GARBAGE AND BUY A ASTATIC 636 NOISE CANCELLING MIC . NOW WE NEED A ANTENNA I WOULD USE A MAGANET MOUNT FOR EASE OF MOUNTING. SPEND MORE ON THE ANTENNA AND GET A GOOD ONE. WILSON,K40 OR THE LIKES. A GOOD ANTENNA WILL DO MORE FOR YOU THEN THE BEST RADIO IN THE WORLD WITH A CRAPPY ONE.

As others have said, if the current radio has a connector for an external antenna, you can use a good antenna, and make good use of what you have. I would suggest buying a better radio like the Cobra or Uniden suggested. The reasons for that are: It will have the antenna connector. It will also have a jack for an external speaker/headphones. It will also have better circuits for noise rejection (noise blanker, noise limiter). Depending on where you have to locate the antenna will have an effect on your range, and the amount of noise from the engine/ignition. It needs to be mounted as high as possible, like on the top of a cab (which you said it was an open tractor), or a metal cover (roof). You can set it on the fender if they are flat on top, and keep it away from some of the noise, but range will drop (it's low). The reason for the external speaker/headphone jack is two-fold... You can run an external speaker, and get quite a bit of audio from it. You can also use a decent earphone (notice, ONE earphone), and still be able to hear what is going on around you. The noise cancelling mike is a good idea too, as it will cut out much of the surrounding noise from the engine etc. You may find a weatherproof mounting case you can safely mount the radio in (like we used to put the AM/FM radios in), and not have to worry about it getting wet. Mount it in a place where it will not interfere with the operation of the tractor, such as not getting the mike cord tangled in the steering wheel etc. They can offer a bit of help and entertainment out there. I am a Ham Radio Operator, and if I was to be working in a field much, I'd have a rig of some sort with me. When I was younger, and working in fields, we just didn't have gear that was portable enough to have out there, even in a truck. These days, there is no reason not to be able to enjoy the hobbies etc.

Don't spend too much for an antenna for a hand held as it will end up in a bale of hay or plowed under.

I'd look around fer a permanent mount lots of yard sales flea markets sells them for 10.00 or 15.00

run shielded coax directly from battery center wire for + and - to the ground If hot-+ is covered it will all but eliminate most RF interference.

Thanks folks for all the replies.
The radio will be used mainly to call home from the back forty since we don't have cell phones. Just a stubborn geezer that likes the older ways!
My handheld has the 6 inch ant connected by a B&C connector, could a piece of co-ax connect to a larger ant?
Thanks

If that's all you're going to use it for I think you would be better off with one of the better FRS radios. They will work much better and you can keep it in your shirt pocket. I honestly don't think a CB is the answer to your problem. There are much better radio's out there today.
