1600 oliver energy cells

I have recently purchased a 1600 oliver diesel the tractor has some starting issues when it is hot (after you have worked it) it seems to have plenty of power sounds good but wont start. Some one told me to check the energy cells so i pulled them out now what how do i know if they need replaced? if so can i find used ones? new ones where do i look? how much should i expect to pay? thank you

They are very expensive new and not sure they are available. I bought one for my MM six years ago and it was $295 from AGCO. Not a wear part so should be able to find used from some one.

I think some one is making a Funny! My Dad had several Oliver Diesels [4] and not starting happened all the time with one or the other.Bad Energy Cells ,never heard of such as a reason for this not starting situation.Leaving the lites on all day when the engine was shut off after plowing all nite, now that was a good reason for not starting.

Energy cells don"t wear out.A long-time Oliver mechanic I know said he replaced 2 in his lifetime due to other reasons.

Are they carboned up real bad? If so,a brass bristle brush and carb cleaner is recommended.

When the tractor doesn"t start, does it smoke while cranking? If so,what color is it?

Also, you"ll need torque specs for re-insatlling.You have a manual right?

Ray,
You've heard of direct and indirect injected diesels right? Energy cell combustion chamber engines were of the indirect type.

It was basically an internal device to meant to further atomize the fuel for better combustion. Some good points about them, some not so good.

OK, precombustion chambers... Got it!

In fact I have one of those engines in my truck. Never heard them called that before, however.

Energy cell is installed opposite side of head from injection nozzle, fuel is shot across cyl into cell. Precup, injection nozzle sprays directly into cup and cup ports to cyl. Case, Oliver, Moline were some that used enegy cell, Ih used pre cup except on the Diesel 350 which had the continetal engine.

yes i have a manual i think someone has been in this engine before because there are 2 different styles in there or is that correct. the smoke was white

Ray,

Unless you have an old Mack prior to the
thermodyne,as in the 510 or 540 ci,or possibly
an IH truck with a continental, you do not have
energy cells. You have precombustion chambers.
Energy cells are on the opposite side of the
head from the injectors. This type of engine
and fuel system is called linova fuel system.

If it doesen't start hot it is normaly the injection pump. If it happens again try pouring some cool water over the injection pump wait about 20 secounds if it will start then your pump head is wore out.

mmoore hit the nail on the head.

Remember - Starts hard cold it's compression issues.
- Starts hard hot it's pump issues.

Last time I changed out one of those American Bosch pumps it was expensive. That was on an Oliver 77 fleetline. Should have changed the one on the 880 also, but took the easy way out and sold it.

Not being an arse here but.

If I was a beting man I would say your pump is worn.

On your energy cells/pre combustion chambers/things on the right side of the head that fuel hits and you can remove. If they aren't cracked or badly scored they are fine.

Hope you get it figured out. Good luck.
