Right of Way tractor suggestion

Gentlemen,

I posted about a few weeks ago about the heavy disking and spraying project I was bidding on. Someone got it for $95,000 less! The rest of us were all in the same ball park, sorry about their luck ;). Now we have an opportunity to do some R.O.W. mowing for a gas pipeline company we already work for. We"ve already sprayed these ROW"s several times, so we know the terrain. We need about 5 more tractors than we already own to complete the project on time. The bosses are bent on buying JD"s. I rarely ever see them being used down here as R.O.W tractors, always crop. Anything the utility contractors use seem to be MFWD Massey"s, Fords (7610"s are very popular, we have a couple we spray with), some of the New Holland TC110 and lots of Kubotas. All have some heavy steelwork built on them, cages and skidplates. Boss reasons that parts are more available from JD. I just think we would be better of buying some clean used Fords or New Hollands for 1/4 of the price, because they will probably get beat to death anyway! These tractors will be pulling 10" and 6" heavy-duty rotary cutters. Any thoughts?

The choice depends on dealer support for parts and service, but if you have an established Kubota dealer, you won't have any problems with either parts or service.

I'd lease something, whatever I could get the best lease rate on with the most generous allowances for damages. On a special purpose job of limited duration there's just no reason to own something. Lots of NH and JD both on mowing jobs here, all leased, and turned over every 2 years.

There is a danger in buying used equipment that you need now and must perform on a tight schedule. He figures that if he buys new ones that they will work throughout the job with few if any major breakdowns. If they do break the dealer will be out there fixing it for free.

Where do you sign the checks; on the front or on the back? I've been retired a few years, but when I signed the front of the checks, I bought what I wanted, rather than what the fellows who signed on the back wanted.

Maybe it is buy the new tractors or pay the profits in tax to the current regime -- I know what I"d choose.

The Massey and Fords where cheaper when new. I would never buy a tractor used that had been used on right of ways, Pipe lines and railroad are the worst. State roads aren"t quite as bad. The tractors used to do that mowing get the "H" beat out of them. Be mowing along and hit a truck tire with the rim still in it. Broke the pto shaft off of the tractor and the deck spindle shaft.
Another thing you need to know. If the OWNERS have bought any other JD tractors lately then they can very well be getting a multi unit discount. That can get as high as $5000 per tractor. So like one of the other poster stated: When you sign the checks on the front then get what YOU want. Until then just be glad they are going to buy you some good equipment to work with.

I think thats what I heard: great percentage rates and multi tractor discounts. I just love the s0und of a 6610 or 7710 snortin'

I'm sure that if you wanted to buy more than one tractor from any dealer, they'd give you a better deal. If you're paying for them, get the kind you want. All major brands make good tractors. Dealer support, warranty and parts prices could be a deciding factor. Some dealers also provide a free loaner tractor if your tractor is being fixed on warranty. Maybe you could negotiate that into the contract if you're buying a few tractors. Dave

I assume the NH's you're talking about are 7610 'S' models rather than the 80's 10 series tractors.... and also TB110's.
The reason for their use is likely a much cheaper price than the higher spec tractors... but you still get a decent hydraulics package and a wet PTO clutch... plus they're heavy built, near indestructable tractors. They're simple with few electrics and stone cold reliable. That's largely why they use them.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

The only thing I see used in this area(S. Central MO.) are NH's and they are horribly abused but keep on thick'in. Asplunda must have 100's of them...........

In Michigan I think about 75% of the counties run NH with Tiger mowers. I see a JD scattered here and there, but very few.
