What all could be wrong with a diesel tractor to make it mis

i am thinking about buying a tractor it misses when it runs.what all could be wrong with it and what would it cost to fix it.if it turns out to be what you suggest it is

Worst thing I can think of is no compresion from a damaged piston. Pieces broken off and mixed in the oil.Cylinder wall/block damaged beyond repair. Fuel contamination of the lubricating oil causing the main bearings to score the crank. All this would require a new engine.
You didn't give much to work from so this would be worse case...
Could just have a dirty injector that a can of Seafoam would clean up....

Could be as simple as an air leak in a fuel line or a bad injector. You need to try and describe in detail just what it's doing. Wouldn't hurt to specify which make and model of tractor and which engine either. Some models had different engines available for them. Dave

If engine isn't making an unusual noise then bad injector, wrong inj pump timing or leaking valve are among the possibilities. Valves could need adjusting from hrs of use.

Could be many, many things, and as Allen already stated, the fix is rarely simply. Otherwise, seems the seller would of already taken care of the problem.

If it runs well otherwise, doesn't smoke, and is just missing on one cylinder - could be a bad injector, a bad delivery valve (if a CAV rotary pump), a stuck injector-pump plunger (if an inline pump), a bad valve/seat/rocker arm, etc.

If the whole engine skips and sputters when you rev it up, but smooths out under a load - the timing advance is probably sluggish. Easy fix on some machines, and not so easy on others.

If the engine starts hard and needs ether, skips and smokes until you get it good and hot, the top piston rings are probably broken, as well as several other parts.

Bought a 430 CASE diesel like that , filters had water in them ,.. Changed Fuel filters after clean all gunk out of tank , I Doubt the tank silt trap had never been cleaned since it was new .... put a pint of LUCAS fuel injector cleaner with 10 gallons of Fuel ... PUT ON A NEW HEAD GSKET and 3 new VALVES,had the head planed STRAIGHT ,,Rebuilt the FUEL injectors ,, Now IT WORX great , And for Me it was worth it . I was lucky it was not worse . These are JUST some of the problems that could be wrong with that motor , There are many more that could cause misfiring .. fix one problem at a time ....

If you ask this question, you are choosing a sick animal from the shelter. If you fall in love with it and want to get it doctored up it will need a hospital. We cannot even begin to tell you how to analyze the hundreds of issues with a diesel that would cause a misfire. We do not even know the brand model or year. Jim

I might as well say it, nobody else would....It could be a scored cylinder wall and crankshaft journal from failure and when you strip it down, theres a block of wood driven in the cylinder. Look for bolts and nuts that have been turned recently or freshly painted to cover same. Probably should do as Allen said...leave this one for a real good/experienced diesel mechanic. ohfred

If you buy it, buy it with the intention of doing a complete overhaul. Diesels are not cheap to overhaul. It's costing me almost $5K to overhaul my D17 Allis diesel with ME providing all of the labor. What started out to be just replace a leaking head gasket morphed into finding another block and total overhaul.

I just worked on a M/F. Ran good at idle. But would miss and shake and lose power under load. Checked the transfer pump filter. Found it full of gunk, cleaned it out. Now it has full power and is running normal. But like the others have said. Could be a number of things wrong with it.
