Did I break a crankshaft? 200 Farmall?

Was trying to cut hay yesterday, PTO powered mower on 2pt/3pt hitch. Was tough going because of damp thick grass and undergrowth. Had throttle set higher than usual.
Engine suddenly stopped, and I couldn"t get it to turn over with starter. Dragged it home, and removed governor and pan. Everything looks OK underneath, and thru the governor opening. BUT, the pulley on the front of the engine looks like it is tipped upward, fanbelt is loose. I cannot get hand crank to line up with front of pulley. Was able to turn engine a few degrees by pushing on bottom of one of the connecting rods, but no more movement.

Is it likely that I broke the crank at the front of the engine? This engine has destroyed two timing gears in the past. Last time - a hundred or so hours ago, I replaced all the gears on the front of the engine.

When I worked at a Chevy dealership in the late '80's, a customer brought in his motorhome because the alternator light came on. When the tech started the engine, it ran OK, but NONE of the pulleys on the front of the engine were turning. He'd snapped the crankshaft in that 454. So it does happen.

Hi RapP: Well, that front pully is press fit unto the crank and is very tight to the crank... so odds high crank snapped. I never heard about that series engine doing that but never say never.. ag

Indeed. Sounds like a strange occurrence, at any rate, so if you take her apart - take pictures for us.

With a good light you should be able to see up in there with the pan off. If there was any impact on the front end look to the block as well. Jim
