i have a 4000 watt gen. i want to mount and belt up to a gas engine-- what direction does it have to turn -- any thoughts ?? it is an older sears model if that makes any differene-- thanks in advance!!

If it was connected to an engine before, it probably turns CW as viewed from the shaft end.

Worse yet if spun the wrong direction. The generator will drive the engine, make fuel, overflow the gas tank and risk causing a fire.

Last time the power went out, I did the same thing, hooked up the generator backwards and when I tried to turn on the light, it sucked up all the light I had coming from my lantern.

I don't think I have ever seen it that dark before.

If there's company name on that generator give them a call on Tuesday to see if they know the correct rotation. Hal

I dont know that it cares what direction it is spun.. since its probably an ac 110/220 volt generator, it probably will be fine.

the only problem will be the cooling fans inside if any. they are designed to move air across the coils and could move the air backwards.. which again will probably will not matter. Or the brushes could be angled for one direction, but not usually.

old generators spin a coil of wire in a dc field, new generators spin a field in a coil of wires.

but still the get spun in a field that changes polarity due to rotation, not direction of rotation.

and Ac voltage does not have polarity.. at least at the generator.. after it leaves it can have a ground and neutral attached but that is external to the spinning coil and those items are assigned at the generator output.
