Ford hydraulic pump leak

my old 1982 Ford 4500 diesel backhoe has a leak in the shaft seal on the hydraulic pump. I have replaced the seal 4 times. After replacing the seal it will operate fine for several hours but it eventually starts leaking bad around the shaft seal.
I will really appreciate any help that is offered.

I'm assuming you're talking about a gear pump mounted in front of the engine, correct?

Gear pumps are sealed by metal parts inside the pump, NOT the seal you see on the outside. That is just a dust and residual oil seal, not a pressure seal. If that seal keeps pushing out of the pump, or blowing oil, it is because the pump is screwed up internally. Some gear pumps are "slightly" repairable, and some . . . not at all. Cessna and a few others have bronze thrust plates and a spider-gasket inside that can sometimes break. Most likely though, the pump is just worn out. If the polished gear faces do most of the high pressure sealing. If they are worn and scored, the pump is shot.

Both my Ford hoes have Cessna 23 GPM pumps. For them, new pumps are cheaper then buying a kit and trying to patch up. You can find brand new pumps for $150-$250 if you shop carefully.

Agree with john... Cessna gear pump is shot. Git another one.
If you want to put your mind at ease, take this one apart and confirm that the bushings are worn out/gone and the housings cut to pieces. Then buy a new pump.
