Anyone used this oil before?

Hey guys and gals,
I was in TSC today to pick up some Rotella for my Powerstroke and ran across this bargain. Curious if anyone has used this stuff before and what their opinion of it is. I can also use it in my Ford 3000 diesel tractor. They only had it in quart bottles, but at 49 cents a quart, I bought all 47 quarts they had. Not a bad deal, 23 bucks for 4 cases of diesel oil. Sorry for the lousy pictures, sort of hard to put a quart of oil on a scanner!

i have never used it personally but have heard bad stories about it. i too have thought about switch from rotella to that but would rather pay the buck and be safe. im sure someone will tell you about there expiernce. hope this helps, toby.

No I have not used it. I went up to get myself some , annnnd , the guy at the store said somebody came in and bought all 47 quarts they had in stock !

Somehow I doubt you drove 600+ miles to get some, but I reckon anything is possible. Actually I was looking at the 2 or 2 1/2 gallon jugs of this same stuff comparing the API specs when a girl that worked there told me there was some of the same oil in quart bottles on clearance so I asked how much. When she told me, I said I would take it all.......didn't even know at the time how much there was. I figured it didn't matter, at the price I could sell it to one of the neighbors and get my money back.

That would be a lot of lawnmower oil! I was thinking more about the Powerstroke since it uses 14 qts. at oil change time.
But I didn't hesitate buying it, after all it's been a long time since I've seen any oil at less than 2 bucks a gallon. Used oil may be more than that these days! And I figure if I decide not to use it in the truck, I can always let the neighbors have it for what I paid for it and do them a favor and save a few bucks on lawnmower oil.

I was told by an oil testing lab that it pays to buy name brand oil because some big stores sell oil with API specs. that has never been tested or approved. The name brand oils have been approved and have a better additive package. There must be a reason they're selling it cheap. Especially on an expensive diesel engine, I wouldn't put the cheapest oil I could find in it. That's just asking for trouble. In the lawn mower or an old beater of car, I'd chance using it but not in my good equipment. Dave

i dont know, we run shell in everything on the farm, i cant complain, never had any trouble with it. others are probaly cheaper and as good, but, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

I work for the company that makes this oil. I do not own the company nor am i a salesman. I set up the bill of material for each product made....What goes in to make each fluid, what bottle, cap, ect. In discussions with the lab guy I have learned that in order for any oil to be called a 15w40 for example it must meet certain criteria that is a range. It can fall anywhere in that range and still be classified as a 15w40. He claims that Shell Rotella falls near the bottom of the range. It seems they have always had a better marketing plan than product.
(I expect flack for that comment so fire away)

Anyway, My employer also makes oil for Bomgaars, fleet and farm, Case IH, BP Castrol, Mag 1, Sinclair, Walmarts Super Tech, and some of the major parts houses.

Bottom line is that this oil is in the top half of the range. Any oil with the API doughnut on the back is good oil. I have been running Walmart Super Tech in my car that has 150k on it and is still going strong. Regualr oil changes are just as if not more important that what goes in so long as what goes in has the API doughnut on the label somewhere.

Just my humble opinion from what I have learned.
Individual mileage may vary. Consider what you paid for it.

There are name brand oils I wouldn't use....Have seen many engines totally sludged up that used a certain oil from out east that starts with a P.....And the oil was changed regularly...
This looks ok if you believe the company...

It's got the API seal and appears to meet modern requirements for DD Series 60, Cummins, Mack, etc... I'd use it without hesitation if I had the chance. You got a good deal.

I've used TSC deisel 30 wt oil in my old Case tractor for about twenty years. Never had any problems. In fact I am using it in my IH "H" right now.

You have the oil I look like for my flat tappet engines that are not new. CI-4/SL has higher zinc phosphorus than the later oils for new roller cam engines. Next time you are in TSC see if the new formula does not say CJ-4/SM. That is good for new stuff but some like the older recipe with higher levels of ZDDP.

I use 15w40 Rotella in my Dodge/Cummins. I tried another brand and it claimed higher quality, API etc. The results I had was chatter in top end and used a gallon between changes. Went back to Rotella, became a little worried about trying to change I've never had that problem with Rotella. I change oil and filter every 5000 miles.

Prove it!!!. I work as a mechanic for a large truck fleet and when we switched to Rotella we dropped a barrel of oil consumption a month.

many people reported a drop in oil consumption in a farm paper,I use Rotella in my truck and tractor.

What year is your powerstroke? If its 2007 or new you should NOT use it in your truck. you'll goof up the diesel particulate filter system since the CI-4 wasn't made for them.

What oil did you switch from?

Rotella isn't a bad oil but it is in no way the best oil out there either. Most tests show its in the middle of the pack. Not sure how it fairs $ wise. Rotella synthetics are salty even by the barrel.

Off brand oils may be ok and "meet the spec" BUT they are unlikely to have the same additive packages that the name brand or premium oils (AMSOIL) have. Additives that help with corrosion, and controlling acids for example.

My Powerstroke is a 96 model, but after reading all the replies I reckon I'll just use it for other stuff around here and stick with the Rotella since that's what I have used in the PS since new.
Thanks to all that replied! I still feel pretty good about finding it for less than 4 bits a quart, should last me a long time around here!
