I"ve seen a thing advertised on evilbay that if I remember correctly is called "The Flasher". Looks like it"s made out of a flashlight and is supposed to plug into the generator and give it a shot of electricity. The shot is supposed to be just enough to get it working again. Long terms of non usage can cause the generator to loose its residual magnetism.

Had a similar problem with my 20kW PTO generator yesterday. Don't have a drill large enough.

I switched PTO speeds, gave it more rpms than it should need. No idea what happened, but it's working fine now. Maybe I should use it more often... Been since December's snowstorm when I had to plow a path to get the tractor to it.

Good luck.

If the field has lost it's residual magnetism (possible if the genny's been sitting a long time) "flashing" the field winding will get it working again.

Try this: Disconnect the field winding in the regulator or junction box. Momentarily supply the field with 6 volts DC (a 6 volt lantern battery works well; it needs only be connected for an instant). Then reconnect the field and give it a try.
