1968 Case 1030

So I am looking to buy the 1030. Price is $3,500. It has not been used much for the past couple years. I will also have about $1200 into a loader.

The owner says the clutch is good. Starts and runs good. He bought the tractor from a retired farmer a couple years ago and just has not used much. So he does not know much more about it.

I am headed there to drive it and take a look in a few days and I would like to know what to look for.

I am quite inexperienced mechanically, however, I can find my way around given good instructions.

My questions is what exactly should I look for, listen for, check out, etc...

I realize some repairs and maintenance will be required on this age tractor but I really do not want to get stuck with a lemon!

Also, how does the 1030 handle with a loader. Is is slow and clumsy or does it make a good loader tractor.

thankyou for any help.

If it has the set back axle it will be better for use . I think it will be a clumsy tractor with a loader on it for most work other than in the field where there is lots of room.

I bought a 1030 about 5 yrs. ago for 1500 not pretty but it has been good cheap power. main thing is keep the manifld heater working and they don't like ether

How does the 1030 handle with a loader?

WELL----all of the 1030s I ever saw had a hand clutch which makes them awkward to handle. In addition the hand clutch was on the left side.

Having said that----I was once told that the 1030s also had a foot clutch available as an option. Guess tight fisted farmers in my neck of the woods wouldn't spend the extra bucks for one.

I had a 1070 and expect the 1030 would have made a good loader tractor.

I have a 1968 1030 that has been in the extended family since new. I was on that tractor the day the radio announced Elvis died. The only real weakness is the breaks. Some guys don't like the power steering but it is not week. Also, they are poor starters in cold but they can take ether (my farm is in North Dakota, we know cold). Mine has been started with it for 42 years. Not having a turbo or any kind of powershift/TA in a tractor that old, is in my opinion, not a bad thing. My friend in North Dakota uses a 1030 with a (I believe)Farmhand 235 loader to feed all winter long. As I recall the motors in the CASE tractors spin several hundred RPM lower that the similar IHC and JD offerings of the era, and that must count for something after 40 years. If that 1030 is in good shape (and you may want to bring someone along that would know) it is well worth $3500. It is a tractor that is tough, simple, sips fuel and is really loud.

Sorry greenbeanman, Case never build a 1030 with a hand clutch. Some of the old 930 6 speeds had them but never a 1030

Dad has a 1030, it was the tractor I always ran as a kid. They are good tractors, but the one thing to watch for is compression in the radiator. Take off the cap, while its running and if it has blow by in there you have some sleeve problems. Ours was always cold blooded, never heard of one that wasnt, easy on fuel and handy for heavy or light work. I read over on the case forum one time about how to make the brakes work good, but i dont remember what the remedy was, ours never had much bite to them. We also had to replace the rear axle bearings and seals years ago. Steering isnt real strong on ours, but maybe our pump is weak. If it has the set back front end, might not be a good canidate for a loader, dads was a row crop and front end was set forward. Pto speed on them was around 1700, so if you use it for pto work don't run them full throttle. Pto clutches are kind of a pain to adjust but if you keep them adjusted up you shouldnt have any problems with it. Good luck with it.

good luck with it, i know of a 1030 in our area, ive been around it while it was working and its a lot of tractor for the price, this one graded a mountain road to prepare it for basecourse, i watched it work and it seemed to just play with the job only heard it lug the engine once or twice and that was to rip a large rock out of the ground, 1 tryed to get the old man to sell it to me, but no deal, its a family tractor, and will remain that way

How are the tires, thats a big expense anymore, if it needs a new set of rears that will be about $1500, then if the rims are bad from calcium it will probably be 600-800 for rims. Are the tires full of calcium?

Good tractor. I hope it has double fan belts. The ones with single had a hard time keeping cool when on a tough continuous pull for dry land farming. Price depends on the tires. A comfort king with loader????

Glad you pointed that out to me. Now that I think about it those were 930s instead of 1030s because some of them were the Comfort Kings, many on LPG instead of diesel.

Guess my brain is showing its age and getting foggy.

If its in good shape that's not so much for a tractor of that size. I see 60 year old 8Ns go that high and higher.

they are Going UP all The time.. Better Investment Than The Stock market ,, Especially CASE , which is undervalued ...
