pertronix electronic ignition

Hello, I have installed a pertronix unit on an A JD. It will only fire on the left side. I am sure have it installed correctly. I put the points back in and runs fine. So I determined the module to be the problem. I sent it back and got another one, installed it and guess what same story. What am I missing.
Thanks for any help.

You have to have the proper voltage for them to run and they have to be hooked up correctly. call Carl at Pertronix and he can send you the info to test the ignition system to trouble shoot the problem.

If it fires one cylinder but not the other the module IS working. There's a mis-correlation between the 2 trigger magnets that slip over the points cam and the position of the rotor with respect to the correct high-tension terminal in the distributor cap.

When I install one of the units I almost always run the distributor on my Sun distributor machine to make sure all is well, then put it back on the tractor.

I've solved some pretty weird spark problems that way.

Also, there's a remote possibility the second trigger magnet is missing from the magnet sleeve.

Yo Bob, Im assuming he used the Delco distributor and they should have 2 high cams each 180 across from each other (which his magnets fit over) so unless they are simply wayyyyyyyyyyyy off position, like you, Id be inclinded to wonder if one of the 2 magnets wasnt there, because when it passes by that obviously WORKING pickup it should cause that also WORKING elec switch to fire the coil. I dont think those caps can be put on wrong can they?? I believe theres the 2 internal pickup terminals 180 apart. If he just replaced the module that wouldnt have affected the magnets that fit over the cam.

BY GOLLY IMA THINKIN YOUR MISSING MAGNET MAY BE THE PROBLEM. It seems if the one magnet triggers the switch the other one should i.e. the assembly must be correct as far as how it fits over his camshaft. If its NOT the magnet one may think a cap or rotor problem buttttttttttttt he says it works with points so the cap n rotor must be okay

ight be grasping at straws, but Pertronix says the magnet rotor to module spacing should be 0.030 inch (should work anywhere between 0.010 & 0.060). Now IF one magnet were a bit stronger than the other AND the spacing is a wide limit, then maybe only on of two triggers it.........yes, two "ifs", but cheap to check the spacing. Go ahead & check in both of the two positions.

I installed one in a 3cyl jd, It was firing between the posts on the distribter cap I had to install the point plate 180 degrees away from normal to get it to run.

I'm not a JD guy but I think I've seen the distributor caps on some 2 cylinders with 2 ADJACENT plug wires on a 4 post cap. That means the cylinders fire 90 deg apart, not 180 deg. Is this correct?

ike old people diapers.....it Depends. In this case on which JD model is being discussed.

Look to see if it is possible to install the module in more than 1 way. I had a problem with one on a side distributor 8N Ford. The module for them has 2 diffetent set of holes. One set caused the rotor to be between distributor cap posts when the spark occured. Changing to the other set of holes fixed the issue.

Thanks for all the replys. This is a customers tractor and he is using it right now with the points back in it. It is a A JD when I get a the tractor back in a week or so I will try these ideas.
Thanks everyone.
