Overkill???????????????

Hey folks,
My little tractor is 26HP, to do what I need a little bit in summer (40HP) it is a little hard worked. 40-50HP is expensive. 60-75 HP is back to affordable. Such a thing as underusing a tractor?

You can drive thumb tacks with a sledge hammer, but you can't drive spikes with a tack hammer....doesn't hurt the sledge hammer a bit to drive tacks.

That's my philosophy...??

The major things that come to mind are the physical size of the tractor and the increased fuel consumption.
Other wise I guess you could used an articulated 4wd to rake hay with if you wanted to!

Down sides are, using a diesel too lightly can cause them to load up a bit. Unneeded fuel consumption can be an issue. Also, impliments sized to a small tractor can fold up like a cheap lawn chair behind a larger, heavier, more powerful tractor. Also consider the CAT I vs CAT II hitch.

But, Slightly too big is better than slightly too small in my eyes.

HP is kind of like money, gravel and grass seed, Dave. Some's good and more's better.

Don't worry about it. The affordable one will be the envy of your neighbors or will justify the rumors they already spread about your choices.Seriously when i dairy farmed i bought a 190 gas AC with a loader and a back mounted Gannon Blade to clean up around the cattle yard and many misc.jobs. We never gave" Too large for the job " a thought. Many was the time it was loaned out to some one with a less capable machine. Besides it cost 1/3 what a AC XT would have,it was of a size that if it was needed for field work it could handle that chore well also.I'd go for the affordable one.IMO JH

No such thing. You can't have to much hp, $, or bullets.
Outside of pulling a 5ft bush hog with a 7020 you will always
be happier with the bigger tractor

I agree with the others. We frequently use one of the JD 70's to run a 6ft Bush Hog finishing mower. Makes cutting real easy and can do the heavier jobs as well. You don't tear things up if the tractor is bigger than what you need.

I would definitely go with the bigger tractor. Less
money is less money. And there isn't that big a
difference in HP. As other's have said, more is
better.

There are many instances where tractor purchases are not really justified.

About 20 years ago a tractor about 5 years old was offered to me, and it had less than 100 hours on it. Fellow bought it with a full line of implements and attachments to treat himself once during his lifetime.

Saw a tractor advertised for sale a couple of weeks ago that was about 20 years old and had less than 5,000 hours on it. A 100+ horsepower tractor so I'd say it was under utilized.

My dad used to use a 100+ horsepower tractor on a Bush Hog brand trailing rotary mower. He used that tractor because it had power steering. The area mowed was grass and was mowed weekly so the mower needed few HP.

I tend to believe in a tractor being overpowered than underpowered. Will sip fuel instead of guzzle it and will last a lot longer.

you were joking about the brush hog and the 7020 I am sure but, last winter I saw a Big modern 8 tire jd articulating tractor (300-400 hp )pulling one of those little fertilizer spreaders (like the coop lets you use if you buy fert from them) around in a wheat field. You could pull one of those with a M farmall easily. It probably wasnt spreading beyond the foot print of that tractor.

Unless fuel cost's a problem...

I've got 2 tractors, a 25 hp rice burner and the larger one at 23,000 lbs. Had an intermediate, but I sold it, for a whole lot more than another large tractor would cost.

If I spent a lot on a tractor I'd feel like I HAD to work it. Nicer when I own them, not the other way.

Drives ya nuts doesn't it? A 55 hp tractor is $8500.00 and a 90 hp tractor in similar shape runs $4500.00!!! I'd go bigger and be happy.

Remember, you can do a little job with a big tractor but you can't do a big job with a little tractor.

A few years back I was looking for a MF135 and ended up with a MF165 (52HP, hydraulic pto) for less money. I have never been anything but satisfied!
