I have a 12ft hydraulic dump trailer that works off a 12 volt battery. It's supposed to charge the battery off the truck connector. How can you tell if it's working like it should be? Would running a welder size cable from the truck battery to the trailer battery work better? That's what they did on my 30ft gooseneck to give it more power.

Check your battery voltage with the engine off. Then check it with the engine running. If it goes up then it is charging. Larger cable will help up to a point.

all the bigger cable will do is add the truck battery amperage to run your pump...it'll charge too but a #10 wire should keep aux battery charged.

Ray i had one for about two years and the only trouble i had was sometimes the fuse would blow in the truck. At that point it wouldn't charge to the trailer. Truck is 2004 Dodge ram 3500 and trailer was a 14 foot Moritz dump. I also put a trickle charger on it when i wasn't using the trailer.
