Converted Bush Hog - Trailer to 3PH

My "new" tractor (D-17) has a 3PH so I decided to convert my 5" Bush Hog from trailer type to
3PH type. It worked alright behind my WD which didn"t have 3PH but it was a PITA to maneuver in tight spots. I found nearly everything I needed "in stock" but I did borrow the tail wheel assembly from my son"s York rake. The fork on it bent under the extra weight so I had to build a stronger one. I mowed about 3 acres with it a couple of days ago and it is a great improvement!

I can't see your top link on the three pt. THis response might be un-needed. It should be a chain or other collapsing length strut. If it is not, it will place direct down force on the mower when going through dips in the terrain. A floating 3 pt can be depended on for some give in that direction, but it is much easier to use a chain top link. Jim

The 3PH was built by the prior owner and there are things about it I like as well as things I don't like. I added strength to the top link bracket by welding on some extra pieces which bring it down to connect on the rear housing which I drilled and tapped for 1/2" bolts.
I also welded gussets to the anti sway bar points as they had already bent under stress before I got the tractor.
BTW, hose anti-sway bars are one thing I really like about his set-up! They really work well.

That looks well done. An adjustable length lift strut on the right hand lift link would allow tilt of attachments from the seat if it had a typical crank handle. many salvage yord hitches will have them. Jim

When I was in high school, my dad was selling a ton of FMC SideWinder 5- and 6-foot rotary mowers. The decks came in shipped in a vertical position--took up less room on the truck--and the hitches were optional, as in, a mower could be assembled as either a pull-type OR a 3-point.

Your 3-point setup looks a lot like what SideWinder used, except the tail wheel assembly was wider and attached directly to the deck, without the cantilever setup you used. SideWinder's axle assembly also was wider, so it could "straddle" the mower deck...not so good for mowing really close to fences, though.

Wow, a thread about coverting a trail type to 3pt and a thread making a three point work on one without- you and IaGary (Iowa Gary?) should have swapped mowers and the problem would be solved!

Nice work in any case. Don't think that five footer taxes a D17 too much. :)

Eric,
I wish I had a six footer but I can't see spending all that money when the five footer is
in such good shape.I did get into some wild pea mixed with gray dogwood bushes the other day that made the governor on the D-17 open up pretty good, tho.

Buzzman,
The only reason I made the tailwheel assembly so complicated is so that it can be readily removed and put back on my son"s York rake.
I do intend to build a new setup at some point.

Jim,
I picked up a nice set of arms with the lift links (inc. the adj. one) at a garage sale a couple of years ago for $50. The guy told me they were off a Massey-Ferguson. Included in the deal were the triangular pieces I used on the mower plus the stabilizer bars that go down from the top link bracket to the 3PH drawbar. I will probably replace the homemade arms with these as the homemade ones are too light and are bending.

That hinge on the mower that the top link connects to gives that flexability. I may make the arms on the hinge a little longer to add even more flexability as the ground around here is quite hilly and uneven.
