to tell what is in a freon canister. Says R 22, but am thinking it may be R 12.

Keep it at a stable temperature for a few hours, then take it's temperature and pressure and check against temperature-pressure charts for R12 and R22.

For example, at 70ºF, R-12 will have a pressure of about 70.2 PSI and R-22 will have a pressure of about 121 PSI.

Of course, if it is an "unknown blend" or has air mixed in, it won't track the temperature-pressure charts.
