Confused on gearbox vent

I just bought a 15" rotary cutter at a auction. It is a Landpride model 6015 and i used it for the first time last saturday and i am confused on why the vents is not working on all 3 gearboxes.Maybe they are i just have some other problem. After i use it and the oil heats up in the boxes air bubbles and some oil starts coming out between the threads on the cast gearbox and the brass threads on the vent.It does not vent out of the top cap on vent plug like it is supposed to.I took the vent out and tried blowing compressed air through it thinking it could be stopped up and screwed it back in and it done the same thing as before.I take it back out put it in a vice poped the cap off of vent and a found a spring and a rubber seat under it.Why is this happening and why are they a spring and seat in there? The gearboxes are not over full. The only thing i can think of is the gearboxes have 90W GL-5 lube in them and the owners manual says to use 90W EP could this be the problem and if not what is?

The spring and rubber seat are a check valve and to keep outside debris from entering the gear box. You can try some thread tape or sealer on the threads and reinstall the breather. You may be overheating the gearboxes as well, trying to cut too fast (traveling speed I mean). Are the gear boxes getting hot to the touch?

I don't think it can be the oil if you got GL-5 in it. Few years ago GL-5 was the best gear oil there was. They make a GL-1, GL-2-3-4, and GL-5. EP stand for extreme pressure. You can get all of them in different weights besides 90W. I would put 140W gear oil, 00 or 000 grease in it.

The gear boxes are supposed to get hot. As long as the oil stays at the proper level, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Dave

You may have a vent plugged by dirt daubers. I had this happen to my Kuboat's transmission vent. Oil was forced out, around the shift lever.

Sometimes implements are shipped with oil in the gearboxes, but in order to do that, they put in non-vented plugs. The dealer is supposed to remove the non-vented plugs and install the vented ones. Maybe this is the case with these?

Check the vents carefully, mud daubers and hole spiders like to fill the holes with dirt/web. Also get yourself a laser infra red thermometer, and point it at the gearboxes when hot. I think 250 degrees F is the number when oil starts burning, if I remember right.
