The Case of the miraculous Oliver

Last spring, this tractor (hope the pix shows) stopped running with a very loud CLANK. Engine wouldn't turn over. Must of thrown a rod. Owner took the pan down and could find nothing wrong. Tested it to see if it turned over,... and not only did it turn over but it started up!!! and seemed to run fine....but something must be wrong. Locals said broken crank.Tried to sell it for parts. I even put it on this site for him. $500 could have taken it. No bites. Finally, the owner sad "garl-darn-it" (or something a little stronger), I'm gonna run her till she blows up. 3 months of daily work later, it hasn't missed a beat. No one has a clue as to why it initially stopped running.

I've seen a couple of broken crankshafts and in my experience they produced a double knock kind of like a rod bearing knock when they break. It's a good looking tractor, worth looking into if it ever stops or gets really bad. Just drop the pan and rock the crank back and forth from the front of the engine and look for the section not moving.

To cheap , if you would have asked $1000 it would have sold . I find it hard to belive nobody would buy it at $500 , I have watched them old cabs bring that at auctions alone .

If memory serves me cprrectly it was at $ 1400 or best offer.Never $500 or I would have bought it,I called on it, for parts as it is about 100 miles from me.

Guess he did nt say it was listed at 500 , if it had been there would have been a riot in his front yard trying to get to the front door first .

He started off asking $1400 or there-a-bouts and that was the advertised price. It quickly worked down till a NY dealer offered $700. He took the offer but the dealer (just west of Albany) never came for it. At that point, $500 cash would have taken it, but without the bucket on the loader.

He told me the dealer would give him $1,000.00 but he had to deliver it.This was to Sharon Springs ,NY and we all know who is there. My interest kinda of fell off at that point.

Yep that was the offer and that was the dealer. For the dealer to come and get it, it was $700. He was considering a junk yard, till he discovered it had healed itself! ha.
