i have a tractor which i use to cut grass with a woods 5' finishing mower. When i used it last it does not seem to turn the pto fast enough to cut the grass it just lays it over. It normally sounds faster. What should i check?

PTO is directly tied to engine rpm via 2.75:1 gear reduction, so it can only vary with engine speed. If the clutch were slipping, you would notice tractor ground speed off as well & no doubt notice the clutch slip.

Woods make many different mowers so fill in the blanks. Belt or PTO drive?? If belt drive is your belt or belts tight and in good shape?? If PTO drive does it have a slip clutch or shear pin?? If it has either make sure the clutch is tight or that the shear pin has not broken. Could also be a couple other things but with out more info hard to guess

Thanks guys, I don't think the clutch is slipping as it drives normal. The belts don't squeal and were new this year. However i will check the belts as that sounds like it may be the problem.

Does you 9/2N have a Sherman auxillary transmission? If it does, maybe it's in low rather than direct drive?

Also check your pulleys. If they are worn enough, the belt will ride at the very bottom of the groove and will slip.

seem"s like that tractor has coupling collar inside trans, they will wear and start to slip depending on load. will eventualy quit completely.

Ah new belt starch and need to be tighen once or twice in just a shot time and I'll bet you find that they have a lot of slack in them which in turn will cause them to slip and of course if they slip the blades slow down and you do not cut grass as well

If you bought the outfit used, are you sure you have the correct size PTO pulley? I know the PTO pulley for the Woods 42 on the Farmall Cub is about TWICE the diameter--and therefore moves a LOT more belt per PTO revolution--compared to the PTO pulley for the Cub sickle mower.

Seen new Cub owners try to use the pulley for the sickle bar on the Woods 42, and then wonder why the blades weren't turning fast enough. That's why I ask this question.

After you get your belts tight on a level place check to see that the blade when the point is forward measure so the front point of the blade is 1/2 lower than the back very important to have the front cutting. Your pulley on the pto should bearound 18 or so in dia.

We have a Woods RM 59 belt drive and there are several sizes of belts that will fit those mowers, in spite of what the parts book says. It is a real PIA to keep the belt from slipping.

Check the drive belts I would bet that they are slipping. Also check the deck level. If it is high in the front then the blades has to cut it twice, in the front and again in the back. If it is out of level that way it will take much more power to mow. Check the level at the blade tips(WHILE SHUT OFF LOL) the blades should be a little lower in the front. Not a 1/2 inch like one poster said. More like a 1/8 to 3/16.

If you will read your instuction on set=up you will find out blades lower in front than the back. You must no have read the set-up part. Woods is very stern about that.
