JD 446 round baler advice

Hey guys, just picked up a new to me baler JD 446. Need a littled advice, when baling I have always shut off the pto when dropping the bale, have been told that on these it is not really necessary, I would prefer not to cycle the pto off and on everytime a bale is formed if possible. I have a manual coming but have not yet recieved it. Let me know what JD recommends or what you do with yours, don't want to wreck anything ya know!

I have never shut the pto off when dumping bales on my Deere balers. I have had 530, 535, 566 and 568. Made 10's of thousands of bales with them and never a problem letting them run. I know the owners manual recommends you let them run as it aids in clearing chaff from various spots.

Thank you. I thought that was the way it should be but my old baler I had to shut off and pto clutches are expensive and not much fun to replace.

If you don"t keep the pto running on the John Deere baler you will catch the belts in the door as it closes. You don"t need to touch the pto during normal baling.

(quoted from post at 01:52:49 08/20/10) If you don"t keep the pto running on the John Deere baler you will catch the belts in the door as it closes.

On my JD 467 I can close the rear gate(door) without pto running and not catch belts with door because the tension arm will tighten belts long before gate closes & locks.I've witnessed this when I close gate after I've raised it and locked to replace broken PU teeth. 446 may be different as I've never seen one.

This doesn't mean that one should shut pto off during baling as already stated because leaving pto on helps clean out dry hay that gathers between belts especially in Coastal Bermuda.
