No second cutting this year...

It is so dry here in southern MO that I don't
think we'll get a second cutting of hay. The grass
sprang back nicely after the first cut, but
stalled out at too short to bother with. Very hot
and very little rain. I know I've got about
another 5 or so weeks and a lot can happen, but it
doesn't look promising right now.

How is it in your part of the world?

Oodles better than last year, but getting hot and dry. Typical August weather. Missed another chance at a small shower yesterday afternoon.

I only feed 1st cut, so am happy. Neighbor kid has a little (1 acre) alfalfa to cut but only a 3 day window. I wanted some second cut for our gelding and stallion when he's not working, but not enough dry days yet.

Here in Eastern Ontario, second cut is ready to go but we're not getting enough drying time to get 'er done. It will be a shame if we don't get the weather because the fields look great.

Southern Okla. So far not terrible. Got 2 small showers less than 1/4" total yesterday. I"ve got Ranchero Burmuda and a fescue of some type. Second cutting is knee high. Temps 98 - 102. Oklahoma in the summer time. Will cutting this week. later Tim

Se okla is hot and dry. first cutting was half of what it should of been. grasshoppers are eating it up faster then it can grow.

seems like i'm in a dry hole here this year, rain all around but not here.

Western Central Wisconsin..Mississippi River
Valley. We"ve had 5-1/2 inches, Sunday to Sunday
More forecast for Thurs evening and Friday...
Most Mississippi River tributaries are in flood
Flash flood warnings every time it rains.
Corn and Soybeans look wonderful, most farmers
are unable to make hay, as it won"t dry between
rains. Some places have had 17 inches thus far
in August..setting new records.

Southern-mid Manitoba second cut finished and third is well on it's way. Those in the area that were not on the ball have just finished first and we're getin rain every 3 days, 2-3 tenths so not alot just about right.little further north they haven't got first cut done as the feilds have been to wet to access.Alot of complaining going on.They want the goberment to pay them so they can keep there cattle.I say sell them and quit askin others to pay for your stupidity. When cattle prices soared here and we had dry years they went and paid a fortune for flat land beside the big lakes.when we had nice years that land was always to wet,now its under water for the last 2 years and they want bail out money.
One guy we sold hay last year had 3 sections and had bought all new equipment 3 years earlier. He had plans on makin big money on canola.Nice JD combine and couldn't get on the feild.to me that is a gamble to farm land that is flooded for 4 out of 10 years.Be no diffrent than buying a loto ticket and askin the goberment to pay you if you had the wrong numbers.

Wet. Many acres of hay lost that stayed in the field for a week or three because it won't stop raining. Everybody that can chop has been putting up silage instead of gambling with wet weather hay-making. Neighbor across the road from me put down 20 acres for chop last week and it got rained on for 6 straight days before he could get back in there.

The grain looks to be record yield this year though, provided we get a dry period for harvesting it. A widespread drought in Russia is probably going to keep US grain prices nice and high this winter.

Well up here at the lake I'll probably get a 2nd cutting but is will be maybe half or less then the first cutting. Yes we need more rain and less humidity. Just sold 8 square bales to a neighbor and got my shoe soak and wet from the dew on the ground and it is already up around 90 So I had wet feet and seat just pouring off my head

Hot and dry. First cut on the coastal field was early for weed control and the production was light.

Second cutting was extremely heavy because we had to wait 3 weeks past the time it was ready because of rain.

Now, its a typical August. Had 19 straight days of 100+, one day under 100 (yesterday) and then back to 100+. Don"t remember when the last good rain was.

If we get a good 2 inch rain, we might get a light 3rd cutting.

I"ll be glad when fall gets here and we say bye to the 100+ days.

In Western Kentucky we have not had any rain to speak of since June. We are starting to have to feed hay. The fields are gone. Rain I don"t think will bring them back this year. I know we won"t get a second cutting of hay for sure. The rain has come toward us several times but it is like the red sea, it has parted in to right before it got to us and went around us several times. We are DRY!!! I am worried now about the pond not having enough water to fill the troughs for the cows. Might have to turn to county water

We have had a great growing season here in central NY Mohawk valley region this year. It started out dry, but that allowed a lot of marginal ground to get plowed and planted which is unusual. Many farmers now cutting 3rd and 4th cut alfalfa on high ground. Small grain crops are yielding very good. corn looks great Record acrages of beans looking great, even some sunflowers. Been hot all summer with nice periods of rain spaced out making for a great haying season. T storm came earlier than predicted today about 4:00PM instead of after senset like predicted. I know that some local hay got wet this afternoon.

Had difficulty getting 1st cutting off - still have 3 acres of 1st to go - because it was either under water or raining .05 to.10 inch of rain every other day - literally every other day.

Just too wet to make hay.

Those with alfafla esp putting it up in plastic have a great year; those of us with grass hay have really suffered this summer here in southern MN.

I won't see much 2nd cutting either - was too wet. Most of my hay ground tends to be the wet grounf the govt won't let me drain....

Mowed three fields today. A field of first cutting, a field of second and a field of third cutting. It has been that kind of year here in s.w. Pa. If all goes well, I'll be done by Thanksgiving!
