I have a 1967 JD350 (Straight) crawler dozer with a 3 cylinder JD diesel engine and a Roosa Master DBGFC311-13DH (or JD# AR70139) fuel injection pump. It quickly powers down and then stalls after starting. If I wait even 5 seconds, it will fire up all right, but quickly deteriorate and stall. My question is; How do you clean the fuel inlet screen in the pump? Also, will a 6 clyinder Roosa pump work if I block off every second high pressure port? Finally, are these pumps difficult to rebuild? I have located seal kits quite reasonable.

For your second question, if you block off every other port, you will hydraulically lock the head and twist the pump shaft off. Or split the housing.
The pumps are not difficult to rebuild if you have the tools, facilities and expertise. Otherwise, I would not tackle it.
The good news is that you might not need a complete rebuild; there is a common problem with these pumps where a plastic ring inside deteriorates, breaks up and plugs things up. Has been covered many times before. Sounds like you might have this problem.

Sounds to me as if the check valve in the return line is plugging. This is caused by an internal rubber ring failing. Time for a pump rebuild.

Thank you for your responses. After considering the three options of 1st removing the glass ball and spring, 2nd installing a new seal kit or 3rd sending to a pump rebuild shop, I think I'll try my hand at option 2. Which leads me to the next question, what is the part number or the seal kit for a DBGFC331-13DH? And does it include the glass ball and spring? Thanking all reponders in advance. I would also like to add that this forum is new to me and I think it's a marvelous venue for giving a mechanically able but otherwise information ignorant man such as myself the knowledge of experience.
