With no deck top on a JD 730 like an IH M thru
560 to take off and wash out the rearend and transmission, what would be a good way to clean it out without taking it all apart.

I never heard of anyone doing that. I can't think of an easy way but the back comes off. You could clean it and replace the seal on the shaft to the power take off. If it hasn't been done it probably needs to be.

don't know weather i would worry about cleaning . ....e-85 and sea foam comes to mind ,,, fill it full and drive it very little with no load ... be prepared to find every seal the tranny has to be leaking ... put in new fluid and lucas hub seal

On my A I just drained the oil out and filled about half way up with deisel fuel. Jack the tractor up and let it run in gear for a little bit. This cleaned mine out real good. I did not or would I drive it this way.

Budd's method of putting some fuel in the transmission and letting it turn a bit while up on jacks is recommended in the owner's manual for early two-cylinders.

I can't recall if the procedure is still in there by the time the 730 came around, but the basic design is the same.

I can attest to the fact that the rear end flush consisted of draining the oil, re-filling with kerosene, driving about 50 feet and then backing up to the starting point, draining out the kerosene, filling with oil and GO! Used to watch the JD dealer come out and do it to our neighbors three John deeres. Two As and a B.
