886 I.H. oil in antifreeze

Well, I found that cylinder #5 was leaking antifreeze into the oil pan, but when I went to drain the radiator there is also oil in the antifreeze. Where would this problem most likely be? A defective oil cooler?

I would bet a pinhole in a sleeve. When the engine is running oil and combustion gasses are forced into the coolant and when the engine is off coolant leaks into the oil. Either that or you have multiple problems, a leaking sleeve and a leaking oil cooler.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yep, I've got oil in the antifreeze and antifreeze in the oil. Some how I'm going to get all this fluid back where it belongs!
I know #5 sleeve is bad, because when the radiator was pressurized it started leaking coolant right away from that cylinder.
Anyway, all parts for a complete rebuild are here, just have to figure out why antifreeze is in the radiator.

If that's a wet sleeve engine (I think it is), then its unlikely that you have a pinhole in the sleeve. The wet sleeves are pretty thick. Its more likely that the O-ring is bad in number 5 causing your antifreeze to go into the oil pan. At any rate, you might as well do a complete overhaul as long as it has to come apart anyway. If you ran it very long with water in the oil - you may have ruined the bearings. Check everything!

Yep, it's gett'in new bearings too. A complete rebuild. Yes, I really don't know if it's a pinhole or a bad seal, but either way it's leaking.

I would bet on the pin hole in sleeve. O-rings will of course be shot as well. Over the years I have seen more than one of those engines with oil that is foamy in radiator and was from pin hole. Some of them the owner replaced oil cooler first but that didn't solve problem. If you have a leaky oil cooler the oil in radiator will be plain old black and whereas a pin hole will be frothy oily crud. Oil coolers are expensive but can be tested as you will need to take it off anyway to clean it out good. We are talking D-360 aren't we.
