M/F 165 selling price

I have an old tractor at our shop that I am trying to sell and I have no idea what a fair price would be.

1968 Massey 165, 8-speed, 203 Perkins diesel, Kelly 800 loader with 6 foot bucket and fork lift attachment. 3800 hours with a full engine rebuild at 2850 hours. Runs great, new fuel pump.

Tires are weather checked and we have a set of chains that go with.

I set a price of $4750 as a haggling point but I just don't know what this should go for. Had a guy look at it and he said it was too much but wouldn't say what he thought was fair and just left.

Please understand, I am NOT trying to sell this here, just looking for advice.

Thanks

Bob

Around this area (north-central Ky) that tractor would probably have an asking price more to the tune of $6000. Unless it's beat to pieces, worn out, bald tires, and smokes like a freight train, $4750 is a good price. I sure wouldn't come down much, if any at all.

I would look at what the loader is worth just alone, probably $1800. Then figure what the tractor by itself is worth. So you are in the neighborhood of $3000 for the tractor.
I would say that for that kind a package, $5500.
But, as MF Poor kinda leaned to, it depends on your area.
A smart buyer will know that tires are figuring into a lot of pricing on used tractors now. If it needs tires, you are looking at around another $1200-1500 by the time you are finished.

Assuming that it's not beat to pieces, it does sound cheap.
Just a thought... but when you price something that cheap it probably makes a person wonder what's wrong with it that you're not telling them... I'm not saying that's the case, but that's what would be on my mind.
For the money you're asking you can probably dump it in an auction and come out ahead...

I am with the others below who say that is fair to low asking price. I looked at that very tractor a few years when i was shopping and the asking price was $7500 here in South Central PA. Location has something to do with it, but as Rod says your price might be indicating that you are trying to unload it for some reason.

Good Luck,

Kirk

Where are you located, at that price I might be interested.

You should be able to get that price without the loader! Why was the engine rebuilt with so few hours? People that don't have the money or aren't interested would tell you it's too much even if you priced it at $3000. You always get tire kickers. Replacing tires on an otherwise excellent tractor isn't that big of a deal. Are you sure it's a 68 with the 8 speed transmission? 165's are hard to beat in their HP range. Dave

The company owner bought this in 1989 from a local farm machinery dealer. I'm not sure if he had it rebuilt or if the previous owner had it done but I'm sure the dealer that sold it did the work. He is the kind of guy who isn't afraid to go overboard to fix things at times. The paperwork that I have shows that this was owned by an orchard locally. S/N is 9A48183

The tires are checked but don't leak and if it were me I would be looking to replace them. That's what I had in mind when I picked the $4750 price tag. I understand what you guys are saying about a low price scaring folks away.

I have a Ford 2n with a loader at home and this MF is an absolute beast in comparison.

I have attached the link to the ad so you can see the photos. Once again, not trying to use this board to sell this!

Thanks as always for the considerate opinions.

Bob
MF 165 on craigslist

Looks a little high to me. But then as you said its a starting point. You can always go down but you can't go back up.

It also has power adjust wheels and some weights. The fork attachment looks well built. I think the tractor is more in the $6000 to $6500 range. 165's have almost as good of a following as 135's. Hard to tell from the picture but the tires don't look too bad. Dave

That is a lot less than the dealers around here are asking. Are you sure it is a 1968? I don't think that tranny was available until later.
