saw this on the news, unbelievable. woman and her boyfriend drove around town stealing manhole covers and then they were gonna scrap them. she had 23 of em. kinda think the scrap guy would ask....where'd ya get 23 of em???
poke here

It has gotten really bad in my area. Just last night they caught 10 guys in my area that stole everything from fishing poles to air conditioning units.

lol extream lack of brain power on both id say, but it would be intresting to be the scrap man when 2 obvious low lifes come in with 23 of something that only has 1 place of use and try to come up with a story about how they happened to own all 23 of those

Someone stole the copper downspouts off our old church built in 1921. Can you say "one express ticket to he!! please". Sad part is, if a hard up person asked, our church would provide them with money or food.

On the news last week someone had stole the outside AC unit from a building. It was surrounded by a 6ft wrought iron fence. They cut the electric wires and freon lines unbolted it and lifted it over the fence.Doubt if they got over 20 bucks for it.

Hey cmon now that appetite of hers costs a lot of money and she has to eat ya know. How else is she gonna pay for those burgers and fries.

I have a neighbor that was the maint. manager at a large stamping plant and these inner city morons that worked there were stealing the punchouts from rails of steel that were being processed. One guy one stealing a pocketful of knockouts every day and he went to the scrapyard everyday and got about 40 cents. The scrapyard guy called the stamping plant and turned him in.
You are Fired!

Do you know how much manhole covers weigh? They are extremely heavy! I can't imagine having 5 of them in a car trunk. They were working for their stolen money! Mike

I wonder if they would have any problems taking them to the recycler. Some of those guys can be as crooked as the thieves themselves... Its is called a fence?

People here were stealing anything metal, stripping const sites (when there was still const going on); only after a couple years of everything from bronze statues to catalytic converters disappearing did law "enforcement" decide that, gee, maybe they ought to make the scrap dealers get ID and pix...kinda makes you think law "enforcement" likes to have a lot of crime, for job security...

A woman was caught near here recently with a whole pick-up load of bronze vases stolen from a local cemetary. She probably wouldn"t have gotten caught, but she had the truck loaded so heavy, she blew out a rear tire and a State Trooper stopped to assist her and found out what she had on the truck. The scrap yard had to be in on the deal.

Funny,

We make premium investment castings for aerospace applications and our cast iron grade 40 scrap goes for about $0.14/lb.

Here's an interesting tidbit of political correctness:

East Jordon Iron Works makes so many manhole covers, their toll-free number is 1-800-Manhole

Sadly they can't use this in California because it offends some people.

True story

Some people decided it would be easy mony to steal radaitors from a heavy equipment parts yard druk several out of the yard they are heavy but the joke was on them Cat radaitors are all steel .08 cent a LB.

You can easily lose a finger or two if you don't handle a manhole lid correctly. They are unforgiving. But it would serve them right if they did.

Some countries will lop off a finger or a hand if you're caught stealing. Probably not a bad idea, I guess. We have to feed those type of people anyhow, one way or another.

I have no patience with a thief.

Last month they (as in some dopers) hit my pile and got about 35 pounds of aluminum plate. This week they hit my stash of copper and got about 50 pounds of 00 through 6 gauge cut offs.

Needles to say I an't happy and a good part of this weekend will be spent securing and inventoring the place (plate was outside, cooper inside). Sheriff has a good idea who it was and the yard incahoots with them.

The sheriff asked me to mark and photograph the remaining stuff so if/when they run out of dope money and come back they can at least go after the yard.

scrap yard around here makes a copy of your ID or DL and photo of you standing behind car/truck so tag is visable...you get paid by check in 5 days...there is a line of scrappers waiting when they open every morning....there was a US "A" Deere there the other morning with front mount plows & on steel...scrap yard guy wouldn't let me near it ...saw it under the torch later that day

reminds me of a story about people stealing gas from the farm tank took old shotgun nailed to shed wired it so when they turned crank shotgun fired far enough out of range it just stung them no more stolen gas lol this was before people werre so sue happy

Had a friend years ago when a lot of people had cb radios in their house. His last name was Mann...and you can guess what his wifes handle was. ohfred

We had a supplier to GM years back, the plant manager and some of his stff were fired for stealing aluminmum scrap. The whole management team was fired.

I remember years ago seeing ND and Chicago Bear defensive tackle, Chris Zorich holding up one of the larger manhole covers in Sports Illistrated. The way that I understood it, as a poor kid growing up in a tough Chicago southside neighborhood, thats what he had to work out with. Borrowing or stealing, which ever it was, manhole covers to pump real iron as a kid.

We had an arrest recently, for stealing wiring off center pivot irrigation systems. Imagine a farmer would be pretty frustrated wheen he tried to fire up the system!
irrigate here

That's the second time recently, in this area, - cops caught a couple guys and a woman, red handed, but that wasn't during irrigation season. (don't think it was the same bunch)

other night in Oz three chaps hopped on the roof of old deserted house to steal copper, one got electrocuted [gone] other 2 in clink.Successful night's work?.

A couple of kids were caught after the fact In the next town over for stealing storm drain grates. they had collected 36 of them and turned them in for scrap and the scrap guy TOOK them. a couple days later the cops came knocking and he said yea and lost all his money for taking them. Good thing he knew one of the kids that turned them in

There was a story on the news , that in Detriot , people was some how stealing the transformers from telephone poles. One guy even lst an arm because of electrocution. The other ones were just lucky I guess or knew what they were doing. They are even stealing the air conditioner units of the roofs of commercial buildings. They will even steal the aluminum siding off houses. Anything for a buck.

Lotta years ago, I picked up couple of old cars and scrapped them. Nobody asked about title. They were in my way on my property. Dave
