I really enjoyed the pics of your place in Germany. I am really curious - is a small place really viable there? What kind of market for a small pig farmer or dairy producer exists?
 

In this area, almost every town has a butcher. Most of the farmers have a butcher/processing room also and there are traveling butchers. Transport is not a big issue. All of them in this area raise grain also.
As I said in your other thread, the animals aren't worth as much as the subsidies they bring. Try to explain but these numbers are only close.

guy has 100 acres and does something with it...

if it's pasture or hay, gov gives him about 100 bucks an acre per year

if it's grain, about the same and tax free seed, fert, etc

if he is straight organic, double the price he gets

If he has stock, he gets extra based on what he has. Couple of folks have told me that if it wasn't for the subsidies, they wouldn't bother with the animals.
