has anyone replaced the seals and o rings on the hdy levers on a 656 can it be done on the tractor or do they to come off.
dealers wants $1000.00 to repair and replace!

Take the seat off and remove the lid.

There is a little drainback standpipe in there towards the left front of the resveior, as I recall.

Remove it.

This will lower the fluid level down below the level of the actuating shafts. Leaking problem solved.

That tank just does not need to be full to the brim and no one seems to know why it was ever put there in the first place.

As in like the boxes where the hoses plug in to? I haven't, but I need to on my 686 soon. Just trying to finish haying 1st as I'm baling with it this year. $1,000?!!! Oh boy, wasn't expecting anything like that.

That rock shaft housing does have some stuff they probably wanted to keep covered. If you pull the rock shaft housing cover plate, go easy and preserve the gasket. Easy use of a putty knife is ok. Don't forget to clean the layer of crud in the bottom that develops there. If you oil is milky, it will never clean up cause of that resevoir. Dip it out and change your oil as well. It will still hold a couple inches no matter what as the drain tube back towards the rear is welded solid at the base so it won't screw out. Don't over torque those cover bolts, don't ask me how I know. You may want to have a tap handy.

Talked to a IH guy today because I am bringing one into the shop to fix the same thing. He said you can do it on the tractor. Might be close quarters unless you remove the fender. Need to borrow his repair manual or get my own.
