OT Travel advice question

Nathan in VA

I am planning a trip west later this month. I am considering taking US-36 across Kansas instead of I-70. I realize it will be slower, but i would like to see as much farming and general rural scenery as possible. Can anyone give me any pros and cons to this route? Thank you.

No pros or cons, but 26 years ago was stationed in WA and am from Ohio. Traveled I-70 to I-5 and up. Then 80 and 90 on a RT back home.
Unforgettable. The I-70 to I-5 trip was 6 days long because we drove only in daylight and stopped a lot to see things. Wish I'd have had more time on the northern routes but it was an emergency situation and a straight thru drive.

Have fun,

Dave

I am from Ohio and when I go to Indianopolis I take 36 instead of 70, this is west from I75. Been a few years but I have traveled 36 From Deleware, Ohio to Springfield, Ill on 36 and if was going anyplace I would definatly take 36. Do not know where you are starting from But have heard that I70 from Columbus, Ohio to the Indiana line is the worst highway in the state Of Ohio. I live just 5 mile off I75 and unless it is an emergncy I will never take the interstate, other highways that I think are just as good and am not white knuckel and shaking when I get where I want to go.

This is the route of the Pony Express. You can take the steering wheel off your vehicle in eastern Kansas - and leave it off for a few hundred miles.

Every twenty miles is a grain elevator, and a Dairy Queen, diner, or restaurant with 4 pic"em-up trucks. So you slow to 45 for a mile or so - stop if you need to - then back up to 65 with NO TRAFFIC.

You"ll make almost as good a time as on 70, and your nerves won"t be shot at sundown. Just about anybody you talk with enroute is a good-ole-boy.

This is America"s heartland - not the interstate exits.

I just returned from an 8 National Park, 8,000 mile RV Road Trip out west and indeed crossed Kansas on I 70 for about the tenth time AND THATS THE LONGEST MOST BORING DRIVE IN THE USA LOL

I SAY GO FOR THE ALTERNATE ROUTE AND THE NEXT TIME IM GONNA TRY THE SAME as I prefer old time small town USA. I do the same nowadays that were retired and in no hurry, the scenery and flavor of the old original highways envokes childhood memories of family vacations when 5 or 6 packed in the family sedan with no air conditioning and kept watched for mom n pop motels that advertised AIR CONDITIIONED ROOMS AND SWIMMING POOLS WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO

John T, not to hijack this thread, but curious was the rim loop drive opened up at Crater Lake, OR when you were there?

Better take your trailer, Might see something that looks like a tractor setting out by the driveway with a For Sale on it. Can't take a nap cause you will only have 400 miles to find one.

I grew up just outside one of the small towns on 36, Oberlin, KS. Four years ago, I hauled a car clear across Kansas and Missouri on 36 and had no complaints or problems. The road is good all the way. I've been told however, that when you get into Colorado it's a different story. I don't know as I haven't driven that stretch in 20 years. My advice would be to turn North at the first junction in Colorado and go up to 34.

NOPE I was there like July 1 and it was still snowed in then buttttttttttt Im sure it was opened maybe a week later. It was ONLY a small portion closed on the Northeast corner so we still got to see pretty much everything. THATS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BLUEEEEEEEEEEEE WATER IVE EVER SEEN. So blue because its soooooooo deep (1,900 feet) and all the colors get absorbed except blue so thats what the eyes see reflected back. If anyone ever goes there many of the services DO NOT BEGIN UNTIL JULY 4 as thats when the snow finally gets removed.

The West side of Mt Rainier Natl Park was fogged in.

If a person could ONLY see one Natl Park, Id say it would have to be Glacier,,,,,,if only one lake, Crater Lake,,,,,,,If time for 3 parks relatively close, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion

E mail me if you are interested in any pics, but I will post them on my Webshots finally but hey you will see for yourself and pics cant do it justice

You won't be sorry. On 70 you only drive. On US 36 you can enjoy the trip, and towns are small and about 20 miles apart. We went that away a few years ago and for the first time enjoyed Kansas. Friendly people too. Enjoy

I-70 follows the Smoky Hill River drainage. Hwy 36 goes along the top of the nnalert, Solomon, and Saline river drainages. It is mostly rough hilly range country with some cropland mixed in. Not much difference between them if you ask me. Eastern Kansas is all hills as well.

If you want to see some farming and lot of crops, take I-70 to Salina, I-35 to McPherson (skirting the Flint Hills), and then take Hwy 56 west or Hwy 61 to Hutchinson and then Hwy 50 west. However, all the wheat ground is cut and either disked or plowed so you will see a lot of dirt no matter what route you take. Wheat planting starts in September. Milo is coming up in places but this is the wheat state.

John we were there after you July 13-14th, rim was open all away around. It had been 60yrs since I was there. I took my son Shawn 22yr and 10 year old daughter. I would not go again in July as the Mosquitoes were so bad they tried ta pack you off, even in the day time.

I like going across on 160 the best of all. it is south. A lot more to see. Have went on 36 and I-70, which were ok.
