O.T. Propane again

Thanks to the guys who answered my first post. Now another question. What are benefits and drawbacks to owning your own tank? Mainly do suppliers hassle you for not useing their tanks? Thanks again,
Mike

I have owned my own tank for 20 years. I call around for prices & always end up buying from the same supplier. Some others want to do an inspection before filling (which they charge for). They are usually within penneys of each other.

Downside is original cost of the tank. Upside is that you can choose/switch any suppliers. Gas charge is cheaper if you own your own tank- suppliers will not fill a tank owned by another company. Ask your supplier his fuel price if you own the tank- do the math. Here, it"s usually 5 cents per gallon discount. Over time......

I believe it used to be a money saver to own your own tank. However, my local supplier won't even fill anyone's tank now but their own unless it's a small tank for someone's grill. If there is a gas leak they don't want the liability of it. You may start to see that with other suppliers as well. Mike

Only tank we could buy around here is the underground tank and only from part of suppliers

I have owned two (farm and lake house) Always call around about this time of the year and have no trouble getting someone to fill them up..Forgot what I paid the other day but 10 cents off for customer appreciation day and 10 cents for cash with in 30 days got it down to around $ 1.23 i think. Lots of people in this part purchased tanks when the city ran natural gas out the main road. Think I gave $350.00 for one of the 100 gal ones I have.

When I bought my tank the price was 40 cents a gallon less than what I would haved paid the company I had been renting from. I figure I paid for that tank in 3 years.

Most propane companys will not fill another companies rental tank but when you own the tank they will fill it no problem. So you can call around to find the best price.

I own all of my fuel tanks: gas, diesel, and propane. That way I am not tied into any one supplier. Two of the local companies around here tried that "must pressure test before filling" scam around here a few years ago. I told both of them to show me the law or insurance requirement that required testing. Nether one could come up with the facts in writing. Just a scam for more money. One local one was charging a EPA fee of $2.50 on each fill up. I sent a copy of my bill to the state EPA. They where real interested in what this was for. He is not charging it this year.
I think it is worth owning your own tank. Now if you are just buying a few hundred gallons each year. Then it is not worth the added cost of owner ship. You can"t save enough to pay for the tank. I use about ten thousand gallons of propane each year, that is heating and corn drying gas. So if I can save ten cent a gallon then that is a thousand dollars in my pocket. So it all depends if you use enough to justify the cost.

Over the years I have had 5 different suppliers and none of them would sell or fill a owned tank, had to be theirs or none. The only thing 2 of the companys would sell the underground tank for thousands and still you were locked to the company that you purchased the tank from. Only reason they would sell you that tank was if you quit them they would not have to dig up that tank and the next company would not fill an under ground tank at all so you still had to have a rented tank seting next to your unused underground tank. I am talking about 500 gal tanks and smaller I thing is only rented.

Sounds like you are jeolous.(sp) Better to have one on the blink than none at all. Just kidding. Joe's machine is still going. He recently had a demonstration at Denton, Texas & it was putting out around 7000 % of imput. Just harvesting those magicical magnetic fields that conventional teaching doesn't understand.

You bet I'm jealous, Teddy. The heating and A/C bills here in Michigan are killing me. If Crackpot Joe has figured out how to make ice cream out of horse-s**t, I am ON BOARD!
