famrall super c, 1st and reverse gear are reversed

my class rebuilt a 53' super c for a project, we finally got it all together, started right up, went for test drive, when you put it in first gear is goes in reverse, when you put in reverse it goes forward, but 2,3,4 are all forward, what did we do wrong???we replaced some gears, bearing etc....but thought we follwed exact order back in???? I am lost and frustrated because i know major work is in store to get it fixed...

Was it a running drivable tractor when you got it?

If it works correctly other than the switched positions I would consider leaving it as is.

I"m not sure of the layout of that particular transmission, but considering that all the gears are there and work correctly, it"s highly likely that the problem is with the shifter & forks. Low & reverse are often on the same throw of the shift rail. If not, the reverse would have it"s own fork & rail. Perhaps the whole shift tower is on backward or a fork reversed on the rail.

that's no big deal to tear it down, more the thought of it,...the h and m can be worked on without splitting, probable the same for the c
