If you folks remember a few months ago I posted a link about traffic violations in my local town on camera and about why I tense up riding my bike in there. Well last night I left work on my new Harley and stopped at one of the interesections in the link just as the light went to red and just as I stopped and less than one second later I was rearended by an empty semi tanker and knocked into the intersection 15-20 feet I never even saw them in my mirror. Driver said he thought I was going to run the light and kept on coming, OUCH! I"m banged up but OK I was wearing a helmet thanks to my wife, back is sore and bike suffered around 5 to 6 grand damage now will have to play the insurance game hopefully the camera will work to my advantage. I will post the camera shot if I can get it. Driver was cited for unassured clear distance. I know the light was red when I stopped and he agreed he was very concerned but drives for a big company so we"ll see.

"I thought he was going to run the light."

As if that is an excuse for him to run the light, too, anyway?

Good luck to you sir on your insurance battle.

Luckily you're just a little bruised up.

Be glad you survived. Motorcyclists don"t stand much of a chance. Lost my 23yr old nephew to a drunk driver in April.

Today I approached a traffic light at an intersection of two state highways. Is traffic controlled and always red for my direction, unless triggered by traffic from my direction. Was green for me, and a couple cars had just cleared ahead of me. I was planning on turning right. Took a quick look to the left, and slammed on the brakes. Was still green for me as a PU truck pulling a large boat on a trailer came flying thru his red light. Never slowed down. If I hadn"t been being careful for light runners, as I teach my driving students, I"d been history. Stuff happens!

glad your here to tell about it!I used to ride a lot but it just got to be one near miss after another.roads were just too full of blind drivers

You were wearing a helmet thanks to your wife? You post about traffic violations, how you're tense riding your new Harley and if you had a choice, wouldn't wear a helmet. That's what I just read. Did I miss something? I think mandatory helmet laws are one of the best laws there is. Too bad they aren't enforced everywhere.

The driver of the truck should lose his license permanently and have some much more serious charges laid. Dangerous driving, undo care and attention resulting in injury just to name a couple. Dave

As a person with back problems ( 1 surgury) be very careful and evaluate it fully, sometimes back injurys take time to surface. My injury was in september, thought it was just sore. Continued to Farm full time. got progressivly worse. 2x weekly trips to chriopractor. finally in march had to go to emergency when I could no longer handle the pain. I had emergency surgury 3 days later. could have prevented much pain and maybe surgury if I had seen a MD sooner.

The red light cameras in our city significantly reduced the incidence of T-bone accidents. But the incidence of rear-end collisions went up by the same amount because everyone is afraid of running a yellow light.

Back banged up be sure not to settle for at least 6 months because it can take that long for all of it to fall in place and even then you may feel it 10 years later. Get X-rays and an MRI and then hope they do it right. Your back is nothing to play with. That said I hate hardleys sorry I'm a BMW man and before I would own a hardley I would have a Honda. Oh ops I own Honda's because I can not afford a hardley I know but I'll NEVER own a hardley long story

Same thing happened to me. I was stopped to make a left hand turn and a seventeen year old girl hit me doing 45mph. for some reason I can still remember when I was flying through the air. I spent a year recovering from the accident. For the first week I thought that my injuries were very minor. I agree with others who said not to be in a hurry to settle. I really liked the Honda Nighthawk I was riding!

Glad to know you were able to walk away.
I gave up on bikes 25 years ago when somebody tried to do something similar to myself.
Nothing quit like the feeling knowing you could have been "dead right".

I gave em up over 30 years ago after mine burnt up at a gas pump. I just had too many close calls with people not seeing me and pulling out in front of me.

there going to have to pay , but they usually just pay a lump sum . survival on a bike is only temporary I gave them up after putting it down twice on the main drag because someone just came out and stopped when they saw me giving me the broadside. 40yrs has passed but it's still the same.

had a guy on a trike in columbus oh. hit a deer and was killed, even the helmet didn't save him

I wish everyone would get as mad about drunk drivers.I drive about 2300 miles a week ans I am still amazed at the (mostly ) Harleys that remove the turn signals and count on me knowing what they are going to do.I am also amazed at the amount of truck drivers that could not hold a job anywhere else so they are now steering wheel holders.I am glad that you survived. The others are correct take at least 6 weeks to start settlement on medical

Gave up bikes a long time ago. To many idiots with four wheels out there. Plus I have had three friends killed on bikes.

Rode all kinds of bikes Owned over 20, untill about 20 years ago. Got too bad to ride, one trip to Datyon OH about got run over three times. when I got home I put bike up for sale and haven't rode one since. Sure miss it though.

I growl about the helmet but I always wear it and if and when I get back on I"ll continue to do so but sometimes it"s certainly uncomfortable especially in extreme hot weather. I posted that thread yesterday after getting off work and popping a couple pain meds. :------>

I had a 1/2 ton chevy merge into me, I had nowhere to go due to the semi on the other side, so I layed it down and hung on. He ramped up over the bike and over my head with his back tire. I had a cracked helmet with tire marks to prove it. Helmet saved my life. Anyone who would ride without a helmet is stupid. Bottom line.

Two types of riders...those that have been down, and those that will...

Glad to hear you're ok. Having lizard eyes to see what's going on around you is a good thing, but never helps for what comes from behind. Again, glad to hear that you're ok.

Ride safe.

Mark

Thanks folks, I"m feeling much better today I"m guessing bruised ribs because I"ve had them before. It certainly was a violent crash according to witnesses who have come forth and knew me since it is one of the most busiests intersections in town and saw me standing by the bike and the color is one of kind around here it came from Daytona Beach Fla. At 63 yrs old I"m ready to give it up and it is a damn shame that we just can"t enjoy the things we like to do but based on others comments only solidify my decision to do so I just have a problem with unattenative individuals who risk the lives of others for their convenience. I sold my Indian Chief 50 years ago when my son was born.Thought he might need me around to help him along. My son in law just dumped his bike. Not hurt bad, helment shows road rash.He took it in payment for a house wiring.Ive been after him to sell it.Son and daughter in college good job with a paper co , does electrical work.Motor cycle can wipe all that out in an instant.I have been worried sick about him dumping the bike for a long time.We get too soon old and too late smart.bc ,have you tried zuchinni pickles and relish yet?
