I have a large gravel parking lot. I am looking for a spray to kill weeds and grass from growing. I use Round Up but it doesn't last, I have to keep spraying. Is there anything that will last a long time , over a year. I'm in upstate N.Y.

THANKS Gary

Your best bet is to spray with glyphosate (round up) then apply a pre-emergent which will prevent seeds from sprouting. Since we don"t use pre-emergents at our farm I dont know the name of one. Ask your ag agent. They should be able to recommend a pre-emergent.

I don"t know if there are any herbicides that have a residual effect of one year.

Check with the local farm chemical/ fertilizer supplier. I don't know what the NY DEC rules are governing what may be a commercial property (versus an agricultural application) but you may want to check. Round Up does not last but has minimal legal obligations compared to other chemicals. It can be bought "over the counter" without permits but you still want to use it within label and responsibly.
Assuming there is a chemical out there that will meet your requirements chances are that it will require somebody with a NY DEC permit to apply it. I would not cut any corners as this is the sort of thing that somebody that has an axe to grind with you will use to make trouble for you (neighbors to the lot).

I think you need a licence in many areas to use the very long-lasting sprays. There used to be soil sterilizer type sprays that would last a full year & more, but have fallen out of favor.

As Nancy said, glyphosate (roundup) to kill the green stuff, and a pre that will last about 3 months to keep seeds from sprouting. I'll suspect many of the corn pre-emerge sprays will work well - as Nancy said, I've lost touch with them as well. The EPA-types don't like sprays that last a long time any more, so I've gotten away from them.

Other than your local chem applicator, check with powerline and railroad folks for what they use on the right-of-way. License requirement is likely.

Pramitol. Other answers are uninformed, except those that state you may need a license.

$45/gallon. 8 oz Pramitol to a gallon of spray solution. A sticker/oil will help.

Don't spray on slopes or you will have dead grass where the rain runs off.

Get in touch with a commercial applicator and have them spray it with a soil sterilant, Pramital(sp) is what is used here.

Have you considered switching to Roundup Extended Control? It has a residual but would still be pretty safe.

As to Atrazine I'd be afraid of migration into the water supply but it would probably work very well otherwise.

i sprayed my drive with pramitol this year, have about 3 or 4 gallons of it on the loft i forgot about a few years ago. works good but make sure it isn't going to rain for a few days and keep the dogs away for the day or so, local chemical big wig said it gets on they're paws and if they lick it they get very sick ect. Good for one year i believe it said on the jug. - Ted

If weeds and grass are growing up in it, it must not get driven on very much which leads me to believe the parking lot is much larger than it needs to be. Ever consider scraping the gravel off and putting down a little black dirt and grass seed. Leaving only as much for parking as you need. Then you can mow it as part of your lawn. "grass don't grow on a well used path"

If it's non restricted in your state there are many options:Glyphosate (round-up) plus pendamethalin, or prodiamine would be the safest, no worries about it washing into grass or shrubs and causing damage. You could use Glyph and Imazapic (for you P-nut farmers, it's known as Cadre, theres generics available. It's what's in Round Up extended control. (never buy that crap, go to the farm store, it will be 500 times cheaper, you just have to do a little math to make your own with generics. For heavy duty bareground, glyph plus bromacil and diuron would be longest lasting, but can hurt nearby trees, shrubs and grass if washed into their that area. There are no soil sterilants, just herbicides that create a barrier to kill seeds as they sprout. Micro flora and fuana in the soil are not "sterilized" One last comment, it's my crusade on this board to prevent the use of dish soap as a surfactant, it is totally wrong and hurts the herbicide. You can get the proper non-ionic surfactant for $6 a gallon, dont think you can buy dish soap for that.

Spray, spray, spray. Then wonder why there is no bees, men have to take viagra, women have to go to the doctor to get pregnant, more and more diabetes, kids retarded more and more cancer. Spray, spray, spray.

Round-up is a contac killer you must not know that when another thing grows you need to spray that one also. Just keep on spraying as the stuff grows you would not like the price of treatring against all pr=emerge on a gravel spot. The Round-up is safe.

Could spred salt on lot its cheap and that is all round up is anyway salt and acid, 100 pounds of salt would be like 6 bucks.

I've tried different things in our fence lines. Alternated spraying a quarter mile or so each with a strong solution of pramitol and 2% & 5% glyphosate and a 5% glyphosate (the 41% stuff) with some tordon rtu added.

Results were pramitol didn't do anything (a waste of a lot of money if you ask me) and I had to overspray with the glysphosate mix. A 2% glyphosate was very slow. The 5% glyphosate was much faster. The 5% with some tordon added was the best.

I've also found that spraying weeds with amine 400 24D wasn't as effective unless I added some tordon.

I can go out to the pasture one day and come back the next and find giant ragweed and elephant leaf plants along with some downy brome over 5' tall. Takes some heavy duty stuff to knock that down.

I'm tired of spraying and putting chemcials in the ground that will get into my drinking water. Here is my solution. Gets the grass and weeds out. May only last a month or so. Each time it is easier and faster. Levels the drive and looks like you put new rock down after the rain washes off the dirty rock.

I have made some improvements to the design. Works great and get to play with my tractor. Have people see it work and hire me to do their drives.
