I ran my 540 Cockshutt out to the garden last week and unfortunately it has sat there through a rain storm. Went out this morning to start it and it won't start but would only backfire. I'll pull off the dist cap to see if there is any water in there but even if there is I don't see why it would backfire. I could understand not starting, but not this.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Pull off the plug wires one at a time and see if there's water either in the cap where your plug wire is installed or at the plug end. Check the coil wire too. Hal

Rain distributor cap and back fire says you have a cracked distributor cap. One way to be sure of that but you will only do it once is to hold one to the cap and try to start it. If you jump 10 feet then you know the cap is bad. Nicer way to check is spray the inside with starting fluid and then let it dry. If you see lines on the inside those are the cracks

Our JD "B" tractors had Mags but, I can't tell you how many (very Early) mornings we had to wake every neighbor with-in a half-mile with them Back-firing and doing anything BUT start..!!

It was Moisture every time..!! Sometimes non to be seen, but show it the Sunshine (open the Mag) for 5 minutes and they would start just fine...

A Dist. would do about the same thing, if it got wet..
