Rod Bearings for MH 44 Special 277

I am overhauling MH 44 Special w/Continetal 277 engine. Rod bearing were .040 which are no longer available. Old bearings are worn and show antifreeze damage. At this point my options seem to be to put back the old bearings or .030 which I have concerns about. This is a "tractor ride tractor" that will not be pulling hard but will run full throttle part of the time. What is my best option??? Is there any machine shop that could make the .040 rod bearings? Any other ideas? I really don"t want to put in another crank! I am trying to do it on the cheap but somewhat right.

I believe I saw that you can get them reconditioned , where they replate the bearing material on the shell...Someone here will have more details .

look harder for the .40's they will be somewhere in a wharehouse under some number.. be sure to get every single cross-over number from every bearing manufacture.

Take the crank to a repair shop and have the bearing journals welded up and machined back to standard size. Then you can use standard size bearings. That way if there is any dammage in the future you have undersize options. Just my two cents!

Your local auto machine shop may be able to get them. Hal
PS: Call 1-800-922-5632 to see if they have a set. If you can't find any I would have it welded and machined back to standard. Check over on the MH forum to see if someone has a parts tractor with a good crankshaft.

Update-Was able to find rod bearings for 2 rods. Main bearings are almost as hard to come by but have ordered from source. Other sources advised me not available. Did talk to a machine shop that can redo my bearings for $110. per rod. I plan to use 2 old and 2 new. Wish me luck! Thanks for your input!

Not any more! I got the last 2 .040 rod bearings he had. We each have our WASTE! Your boat, booze, golf, fancy car, stereo systems are waste to me!!

"Somewhat right" will usually end up costing even more than just doing it completely right the first time. Take that crank to a machine shop and have it built up and reground to standard sized.

The big reason you can't find 0.040" undersized bearings is because most repair shops refuse to use anything more than 0.020" undersized.
