How can I remove rear wheels safely?

I have to take the rear wheels off a medium size tractor. In the past I have done it by hand and by using a 3PL crane and think neither method is safe.

I am thinking about welding up a trolly on heavy castors, and a post welded onto the trolly to chain the top of the wheel to.

Can anyone give me advise on this?

Thanks

Maybe you can find a cheaper dolly like they use for semi tires? Uses a hydraulic jack and the tire can fall over backwards. Dave

I know not everyone has one, but I reckon a fork lift is the safest way. Just take the wieght with the forks, then remove the nuts, push the wheel back onto the mast and slip a chain round it. If at all possible get a mate to help you.

I would say that your trolley idea is good. You might look for a used pallet jack to base it on. As MF 135 says that's what they use in heavy truck shops to remove the duals for brake, bearing and spring work.

Aloha,
You could make something similar to a pallet jack but a little shorter with a backing plate to hold the tire. You could also purchase a tire jack but would be cheaper if you made one yourself.

Back in the 70's JD dealer I worked for had a 4 wheeled tire dolly that jacked up and had an upright frame to chain tire/wheel to keep tire/wheel upright and stable. It was sold by JD to help in altering finals drives on 30 series JD rowcrop tractors under JD's recall program. The dolly worked out very well.

I use a "worksaver", which is a poor man"s version of a fork-lift. Attaches to the 3 pt hitch of another tractor. Back up to tire, forks on ground front and back, lift tire slightly. SECURE with chain before lifting or transport.

Got a good size loader tractor or skidsteer?

We have always done well using the loader tractor for a rudimentary crane. We've pulled cabs off tractors. We've handled duals. We've pulled wheels. We've even used the loader as a crane to get a split tractor back together when we couldn't get it to line up using the splitting stands.

Thanks for all the replies.

The wheels have to come off my fork lift tractor, other wise I would have used it.

Think I will make up the trolly,(similar to the one pictured) and add provision to lift/manourver it with 3PL on another tractor
